45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Verna George Brown Mitchell was inducted into the
67 African American Educators Hall of Fame on April 18, 2015; and
78 WHEREAS, The hall of fame is part of the African American
89 Education Archives and History Program, which since its founding in
910 2002 has focused on the vital role that education plays in the
1011 African American experience in Dallas County; the organization
1112 preserves important artifacts, documents, visual images, and oral
1213 accounts, and its African American Educators Hall of Fame raises
1314 public awareness of the significant contributions made by teachers,
1415 administrators, librarians, and others; and
1516 WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell worked as a teacher and principal of a
1617 number of Dallas ISD schools before assuming the role of district
1718 administrator, where she supported operations in the East Oak Cliff
1819 subdistrict and was the program manager for the Office of
1920 Discipline and Student Services; she retired after 35 years of
2021 dedicated service, but she continued to encourage students and held
2122 leadership positions with Dallas Can Academy and Mount Hebron
2223 Christian Academy; and
2324 WHEREAS, Throughout her notable tenure, Ms. Mitchell oversaw
2425 a number of developments in the district, including the
2526 implementation of the after-school program at Thomas Tolbert
2627 Elementary School, for which it earned designation as a national
2728 site for the Lights On Afterschool program; she was selected to
2829 attend The Principals' Center at the Harvard Graduate School of
2930 Education, and Governor Ann Richards appointed her to serve on the
3031 State ESEA committee; and
3132 WHEREAS, Through her outstanding accomplishments, Verna
3233 Mitchell has made a positive difference in the lives of countless
3334 Texans, and she may take justifiable pride in this prestigious
3435 accolade; now, therefore, be it
3536 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3637 Legislature hereby congratulate Verna George Brown Mitchell on her
3738 induction into the African American Educators Hall of Fame and
3839 extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
3940 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4041 prepared for Ms. Mitchell as an expression of high regard by the
4142 Texas House of Representatives.
