| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Verna George Brown Mitchell was inducted into the |

| 6 | 7 | | African American Educators Hall of Fame on April 18, 2015; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The hall of fame is part of the African American |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | Education Archives and History Program, which since its founding in |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | 2002 has focused on the vital role that education plays in the |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | African American experience in Dallas County; the organization |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | preserves important artifacts, documents, visual images, and oral |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | accounts, and its African American Educators Hall of Fame raises |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | public awareness of the significant contributions made by teachers, |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | administrators, librarians, and others; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell worked as a teacher and principal of a |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | number of Dallas ISD schools before assuming the role of district |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | administrator, where she supported operations in the East Oak Cliff |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | subdistrict and was the program manager for the Office of |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Discipline and Student Services; she retired after 35 years of |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | dedicated service, but she continued to encourage students and held |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | leadership positions with Dallas Can Academy and Mount Hebron |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Christian Academy; and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Throughout her notable tenure, Ms. Mitchell oversaw |

| 24 | 25 | | a number of developments in the district, including the |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | implementation of the after-school program at Thomas Tolbert |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Elementary School, for which it earned designation as a national |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | site for the Lights On Afterschool program; she was selected to |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | attend The Principals' Center at the Harvard Graduate School of |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | Education, and Governor Ann Richards appointed her to serve on the |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | State ESEA committee; and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Through her outstanding accomplishments, Verna |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | Mitchell has made a positive difference in the lives of countless |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | Texans, and she may take justifiable pride in this prestigious |

| 34 | 35 | | accolade; now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Verna George Brown Mitchell on her |
