45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Radford School in El Paso is celebrating the 105th
67 anniversary of its opening in 2015; and
78 WHEREAS, Considered the oldest private school in the city,
89 Radford School was founded in 1910 as the El Paso School for Girls
910 by local businessmen and ranchers; in 1927, Dr. Lucinda de Leftwich
1011 Templin, a native of Missouri, took the helm as principal; after
1112 discovering that the school faced a substantial debt, she persuaded
1213 her friends George A. and Julia Brown Radford to save it from
1314 bankruptcy; the Radfords paid off the mortgage, saw to the
1415 incorporation of the school, and remained generous benefactors over
1516 the ensuing years; renamed the Radford School for Girls in the early
1617 1930s, the institution assumed its present name in 1976, when it
1718 became coed; and
1819 WHEREAS, Dr. Templin had a profound influence on the
1920 direction of the school throughout her 41-year tenure; often
2021 remarking that there is "no easy road to education and no substitute
2122 for character," she focused on providing students with a
2223 well-rounded learning experience that included public speaking and
2324 physical education in addition to challenging college preparatory
2425 classes; and
2526 WHEREAS, Today, Radford School serves a diverse student body
2627 in grades pre-K through 12; while continuing to promote academic
2728 achievement, the school also affords its students the opportunity
2829 to balance their studies with a range of extracurricular
2930 activities, including athletics and community service; in
3031 addition, the school year is punctuated by a host of special events,
3132 such as Spirit Week, the May Fete, the Fall Festival, and the winter
3233 Operetta; and
3334 WHEREAS, Alumni of Radford School have attained success in
3435 myriad fields; among their number is Sandra Day O'Connor, who in
3536 1981 became the first woman to be appointed to the United States
3637 Supreme Court; and
3738 WHEREAS, For more than a century, Radford School has promoted
3839 its students' intellectual and social development, helping them to
3940 build a foundation for a bright and fulfilling future; now,
4041 therefore, be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby commemorate the 105th anniversary of Radford
4344 School and extend to all those associated with the school sincere
4445 best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4748 House of Representatives.
