5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Radford School in El Paso is celebrating the 105th |

6 | 7 | | anniversary of its opening in 2015; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Considered the oldest private school in the city, |
---|
8 | 9 | | Radford School was founded in 1910 as the El Paso School for Girls |
---|
9 | 10 | | by local businessmen and ranchers; in 1927, Dr. Lucinda de Leftwich |
---|
10 | 11 | | Templin, a native of Missouri, took the helm as principal; after |
---|
11 | 12 | | discovering that the school faced a substantial debt, she persuaded |
---|
12 | 13 | | her friends George A. and Julia Brown Radford to save it from |
---|
13 | 14 | | bankruptcy; the Radfords paid off the mortgage, saw to the |
---|
14 | 15 | | incorporation of the school, and remained generous benefactors over |
---|
15 | 16 | | the ensuing years; renamed the Radford School for Girls in the early |
---|
16 | 17 | | 1930s, the institution assumed its present name in 1976, when it |
---|
17 | 18 | | became coed; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Templin had a profound influence on the |
---|
19 | 20 | | direction of the school throughout her 41-year tenure; often |
---|
20 | 21 | | remarking that there is "no easy road to education and no substitute |
---|
21 | 22 | | for character," she focused on providing students with a |
---|
22 | 23 | | well-rounded learning experience that included public speaking and |
---|
23 | 24 | | physical education in addition to challenging college preparatory |
---|
24 | 25 | | classes; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Today, Radford School serves a diverse student body |
---|
26 | 27 | | in grades pre-K through 12; while continuing to promote academic |
---|
27 | 28 | | achievement, the school also affords its students the opportunity |
---|
28 | 29 | | to balance their studies with a range of extracurricular |
---|
29 | 30 | | activities, including athletics and community service; in |
---|
30 | 31 | | addition, the school year is punctuated by a host of special events, |
---|
31 | 32 | | such as Spirit Week, the May Fete, the Fall Festival, and the winter |
---|
32 | 33 | | Operetta; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Alumni of Radford School have attained success in |
---|
34 | 35 | | myriad fields; among their number is Sandra Day O'Connor, who in |
---|
35 | 36 | | 1981 became the first woman to be appointed to the United States |
---|
36 | 37 | | Supreme Court; and |
---|
37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, For more than a century, Radford School has promoted |
---|
38 | 39 | | its students' intellectual and social development, helping them to |

39 | 40 | | build a foundation for a bright and fulfilling future; now, |

40 | 41 | | therefore, be it |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 105th anniversary of Radford |

43 | 44 | | School and extend to all those associated with the school sincere |

44 | 45 | | best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |

45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

46 | 47 | | prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
