| 7 | 8 | | system of government, law, and jurisprudence; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In the early years of the 13th century, the barons of |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | England rose up in rebellion against their monarch, King John; they |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | objected to his excessive taxation, punitive fines, and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | manipulation of the legal system, and they forced the king to |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | negotiate with them at Runnymede, along the River Thames in |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | southern England; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, On June 15, 1215, King John and the barons agreed |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | upon the Magna Carta, or "Great Charter"; drafted in Latin, this |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | remarkable document addressed the grievances of the barons and put |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | limits on the executive power of the king, initiating a tradition of |

| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The Magna Carta strongly influenced the |

| 23 | 24 | | Texas, and it is one of the sources for the Texas Bill of Rights; in |

| 25 | 26 | | grants of power are to be interpreted in the light of the maxims of |
