| 7 | 8 | | opportunity to celebrate the dedication and hard work of the staff |

| 8 | 9 | | of the Dallas County Sheriff's Department; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan created National |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Correctional Officers Week in 1984, and two years later, Congress |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | expanded the focus to honor both correctional officers and other |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | vital employees of our nation's prisons and jails; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The seventh-largest jail system in the nation, the |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Dallas County Jail is staffed by 1,500 licensed detention officers |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | and 200 clerks, and its facilities encompass five jails and a |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | state-of-the-art, centralized medical and mental health unit; the |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | system supports more than 85 law enforcement agencies in the Dallas |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | County area, and it has passed inspection by the Texas Commission on |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Jail Standards for six years in a row; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Each year, 80,000 inmates are booked into the Dallas |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | County Jail, which provides custodial care and control for |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | approximately 6,000 inmates on any given day; the volume of work |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | accomplished annually by the jail's detention service officers and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | employees includes the transporting of approximately 20,000 |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | inmates for a total distance of about 1.5 million miles, the |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | supervising of 400,000 sick calls and off-site appointments, and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | the dispensing of 5 million pills, as well as the serving of more |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | than 9 million inmate meals and the washing of 3.4 million pounds of |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | laundry; jail staff also process 100,000 criminal and civil court |

| 30 | 31 | | cases a year and more than 1.7 million pages of documents, such as |

| 31 | 32 | | police reports, fingerprint cards, medical forms, and jail records, |

| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Correctional officers and employees fill a |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | demanding role in our society, simultaneously ensuring the safety |

| 35 | 36 | | of the public and the welfare of the inmates in their care, and they |

| 36 | 37 | | handle their often dangerous duties with courage, patience, and |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | resourcefulness; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby honor the detention service officers and |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | employees of the Dallas County Sheriff's Department on the occasion |
|---|
| 41 | 42 | | of National Correctional Officers and Employees Week and extend to |
|---|
| 42 | 43 | | them sincere best wishes for continued success in their important |
|---|
