| 9 | 10 | | nonvalvular, and nonvalvular AF affects an estimated 5.8 million |

| 10 | 11 | | people in the United States; the risk of stroke is five times |

| 11 | 12 | | greater for these individuals, and nonvalvular atrial fibrillation |

| 12 | 13 | | is estimated to cost $6.65 billion per year, primarily due to the |

| 13 | 14 | | direct and indirect costs of hospitalization; and |

| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In both the United States and Texas, stroke was the |

| 15 | 16 | | fourth leading cause of death as of 2012; it disproportionately |

| 16 | 17 | | affects minorities, including African Americans, who are twice as |

| 17 | 18 | | likely to die from stroke as Caucasians, and Hispanics, who have a |

| 18 | 19 | | higher rate of hemorrhagic strokes at a younger age than |

| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Risk factors for atrial fibrillation include high |

| 21 | 22 | | blood pressure, heart failure, diabetes, advanced age, |

| 22 | 23 | | hyperthyroidism, and heart disease; in addition, many modifiable |

| 23 | 24 | | lifestyle behaviors can lead to a stroke, among them physical |

| 24 | 25 | | inactivity, tobacco use, poor diet, and heavy alcohol consumption; |

| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Atrial fibrillation is an extremely serious health |

| 27 | 28 | | issue, but outcomes can be improved with heightened awareness of |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | the condition and effective measures for treatment and prevention; |

| 29 | 30 | | now, therefore, be it |

| 30 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | Legislature hereby recognize the second week of May 2015 as Atrial |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | Fibrillation Week. |
