56 WHEREAS, Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of
67 irregular heartbeat, according to the Centers for Disease Control
78 and Prevention; and
89 WHEREAS, Approximately 95 percent of atrial fibrillation is
910 nonvalvular, and nonvalvular AF affects an estimated 5.8 million
1011 people in the United States; the risk of stroke is five times
1112 greater for these individuals, and nonvalvular atrial fibrillation
1213 is estimated to cost $6.65 billion per year, primarily due to the
1314 direct and indirect costs of hospitalization; and
1415 WHEREAS, In both the United States and Texas, stroke was the
1516 fourth leading cause of death as of 2012; it disproportionately
1617 affects minorities, including African Americans, who are twice as
1718 likely to die from stroke as Caucasians, and Hispanics, who have a
1819 higher rate of hemorrhagic strokes at a younger age than
1920 Caucasians; and
2021 WHEREAS, Risk factors for atrial fibrillation include high
2122 blood pressure, heart failure, diabetes, advanced age,
2223 hyperthyroidism, and heart disease; in addition, many modifiable
2324 lifestyle behaviors can lead to a stroke, among them physical
2425 inactivity, tobacco use, poor diet, and heavy alcohol consumption;
2526 and
2627 WHEREAS, Atrial fibrillation is an extremely serious health
2728 issue, but outcomes can be improved with heightened awareness of
2829 the condition and effective measures for treatment and prevention;
2930 now, therefore, be it
3031 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3132 Legislature hereby recognize the second week of May 2015 as Atrial
3233 Fibrillation Week.
