| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Starr County Youth Fair is celebrating its 50th |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Founded by adult leaders of the Starr-Grande 4-H |

| 8 | 9 | | Club, the fair was originally held on the grounds of what is now |

| 9 | 10 | | Roque Guerra Jr. Elementary School in Rio Grande City; the |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | inaugural event was funded by donations and proceeds from raffles |

| 11 | 12 | | and snack sales, and it featured 5 steers and fewer than 10 lambs; |

| 12 | 13 | | and |

| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The fair had grown considerably by the mid-1970s, |

| 14 | 15 | | and members of the local 4-H, FHA, and FFA submitted more than 600 |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | entries in the various competitions, which included livestock as |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | well as art and science; moreover, a parade, rodeo, and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | country-western dance were added to the festivities; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In 1983, the establishment of the Starr County Fair |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Association launched a new era, and its board members guided |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | further expansion of the event; the fair today takes place on more |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | than one weekend, and among numerous family-oriented activities, it |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | encompasses parades, musical entertainment, a high school art show, |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | an academic rodeo, cooking contests, a wild game dinner and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | scholarship fund-raiser, and the Starr County Queen pageant; and |

| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, For a half-century, the Starr County Youth Fair has |

| 26 | 27 | | brought the community together to celebrate the achievements of |

| 27 | 28 | | area students, and its longevity is a tribute to the dedication of |

| 28 | 29 | | the many public-spirited volunteers and civic leaders who have |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | given generously of their time and talents in its behalf; now, |

| 31 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 32 | 33 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Starr |

| 33 | 34 | | County Youth Fair and commend all those who have contributed to the |

| 34 | 35 | | enduring success of this noteworthy event; and, be it further |
