| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Live Oak County are gathering in Austin |

| 6 | 7 | | on May 5, 2015, to celebrate Live Oak County Day at the State |
|---|
| 7 | 8 | | Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In the years before it became part of Texas, the area |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | now known as Live Oak County was home to Native American tribes, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Spanish and Mexican colonists, and Irish immigrants, and this |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | diversity of cultures greatly influenced the development of the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | area; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Live Oak County was created on February 2, 1856, |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | from parts of San Patricio and Nueces Counties and was named after |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | the imposing and majestic tree that grew throughout much of the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | region; the economy was initially driven by the raising of sheep, |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | cattle, and cotton, but it was diversified by the discovery of oil |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | and natural gas in the 1930s and uranium in the 1960s; in recent |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | years, new technologies have improved the extraction of valuable |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | hydrocarbons from the Eagle Ford Shale underlying the county; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, George West, the county seat, has been designated as |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | the official Storyfest Capital of Texas, and for more than 25 years |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | it has hosted an annual event to celebrate the art and tradition of |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | storytelling, while the nearby town of Three Rivers delights |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | residents and visitors alike with its annual Salsa Festival; other |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | notable communities include Dinero, Lagarto, Pernitas Point, and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | Whitsett; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The rugged beauty of Live Oak County's brushy plains |

| 29 | 30 | | is complemented by the Frio, Nueces, and Atascosa Rivers, and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | lovers of the Texas landscape are drawn to such attractions as Lake |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon State Park; and |

| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich and colorful history as they |

| 33 | 34 | | work together to build a bright future, the citizens of Live Oak |

| 34 | 35 | | County may take justifiable pride in the important role their |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | unique region continues to play in the story of the Lone Star State; |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 5, 2015, as Live Oak County Day at |

| 39 | 40 | | the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |
