5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Shawn Flanagan has built an exceptional record of |

8 | 9 | | of his outstanding 15-year tenure; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Coach Flanagan graduated with a bachelor's degree |

10 | 11 | | from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and a master's degree |
---|
11 | 12 | | from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and he has earned Level |
---|
12 | 13 | | 2 certification in distances from USA Track & Field; while a |
---|
13 | 14 | | student, he qualified for the NCAA national championship four times |
---|
14 | 15 | | in cross-country and twice in track, and he ran in the U.S. Olympic |
---|
15 | 16 | | Trials in 1980; and |

16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Beginning his career in coaching at UTSA, |

17 | 18 | | Mr. Flanagan helped establish the university's track and field |

18 | 19 | | program in 1981 and took the reins as head coach three years later; |

19 | 20 | | under his guidance, the Roadrunners garnered 18 titles in |

20 | 21 | | cross-country and track, in addition to becoming the first squad |
---|
21 | 22 | | from the Southland Conference to win an NCAA regional title in |
---|
22 | 23 | | cross-country; the team also set a conference record by placing |
---|
23 | 24 | | 19th at an NCAA national championship; in 1997, Coach Flanagan |
---|
24 | 25 | | became head coach of the men's cross-country team at The University |

25 | 26 | | of Texas at Austin, where he led the Longhorns to three Big 12 |

27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Shawn Flanagan launched the track and field program |

31 | 32 | | well as three NCAA national championships, seven NCAA All-American |

32 | 33 | | Awards, and four NCAA Academic All-American Team honors; Coach |

33 | 34 | | Flanagan has further distinguished himself by directing the |

34 | 35 | | Islanders Splash, an annual cross-country meet attended by |

35 | 36 | | thousands of collegiate, high school, and middle school runners; |

37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Repeatedly honored for his ability to inspire his |

38 | 39 | | student-athletes, this esteemed Texan has been recognized as either |

39 | 40 | | an NCAA Regional or Conference Coach of the Year more than 30 times, |

40 | 41 | | and he was inducted into the UW-Platteville Athletic Hall of Fame in |

42 | 43 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Shawn Flanagan is blessed with |

43 | 44 | | the love and support of his wife, Beverly Johnson, and their son, |

45 | 46 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Texas A&M |

46 | 47 | | University--Corpus Christi track and field program has greatly |

47 | 48 | | benefited from Shawn Flanagan's dedication, professionalism, and |

48 | 49 | | commitment to excellence, and his teams are sure to be a further |

49 | 50 | | source of pride and excitement for Islanders fans in the years to |

51 | 52 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
