5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Corpus Christi Literacy Council is celebrating |

6 | 7 | | the 30th anniversary of its founding in 2016; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Since opening its doors in 1986, the Corpus Christi |
---|
8 | 9 | | Literacy Council has focused on reducing the functional illiteracy |
---|
9 | 10 | | rate in Nueces County, which today is estimated at 17 percent; in |
---|
10 | 11 | | addition to developing and promoting literacy programs, the |
---|
11 | 12 | | organization recruits volunteer tutors who work one-on-one with |
---|
12 | 13 | | students at more than 80 tutoring sites in its service area; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, To date, the CCLC has helped more than 6,400 |
---|
14 | 15 | | individuals throughout the Corpus Christi Bay Area and South Texas; |
---|
15 | 16 | | the literacy council also hosts periodic workshops for tutors and |
---|
16 | 17 | | literacy advocates as well as other fun events designed to promote |
---|
17 | 18 | | support and enthusiasm for reading; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Through its myriad efforts, the Corpus Christi |

19 | 20 | | Literacy Council is helping thousands of area residents to develop |
---|
20 | 21 | | a skill that is essential to everyday living, and in so doing, it is |
---|
21 | 22 | | making a worthy contribution to the community as a whole; now, |
---|
22 | 23 | | therefore, be it |

23 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

24 | 25 | | Legislature hereby honor the Corpus Christi Literacy Council on the |

25 | 26 | | 30th anniversary of its founding and commend all those associated |
---|
26 | 27 | | with the group for their energy and dedication; and, be it further |
---|
27 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
28 | 29 | | prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the |

29 | 30 | | Texas House of Representatives. |
