6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Around the world, incidents of anti-Semitism are |
---|
7 | 7 | | increasing, and Israel and its supporters are deeply concerned |
---|
8 | 8 | | about the role played by the international Boycott, Divestment, and |
---|
9 | 9 | | Sanctions movement as a vehicle for spreading anti-Semitism and |
---|
10 | 10 | | advocating the elimination of the Jewish state; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The dramatic increase in BDS campaign activities on |
---|
12 | 12 | | college campuses around the country has resulted in increased |
---|
13 | 13 | | animosity, and it negatively impacts student programming related to |
---|
14 | 14 | | Israel and politics in the Middle East; in Texas, such campaigns are |
---|
15 | 15 | | harmful to the state's relationship with Israel and its Jewish |
---|
16 | 16 | | citizens, and they have a deleterious impact on the learning |
---|
17 | 17 | | environment; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Many of the largest academic associations in the |
---|
19 | 19 | | United States have condemned the BDS campaign's call for academic |
---|
20 | 20 | | boycotts; moreover, a host of university presidents and leading |
---|
21 | 21 | | scholars have spoken out against such boycotts as violations of the |
---|
22 | 22 | | bedrock principle of academic freedom; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The United States has consistently reaffirmed the |
---|
24 | 24 | | Jewish people's right to self-determination, as well as the right |
---|
25 | 25 | | of Israel to engage in lawful acts of self-defense, and by failing |
---|
26 | 26 | | to recognize those rights, the international BDS movement is |
---|
27 | 27 | | seeking to undermine our nation's endeavors in behalf of peace, |
---|
28 | 28 | | justice, and human rights; now, therefore, be it |
---|
29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby condemn anti-Semitism in all its forms and |
---|
31 | 31 | | express its opposition to the international Boycott, Divestment, |
---|
32 | 32 | | and Sanctions movement; and, be it further |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the chief clerk forward official copies of |
---|
34 | 34 | | this resolution to the president of the United States, to the |
---|
35 | 35 | | president of the Senate and the speaker of the House of |
---|
36 | 36 | | Representatives of the United States Congress, and to all the |
---|
37 | 37 | | members of the Texas delegation to Congress with the request that |
---|
38 | 38 | | this resolution be entered in the Congressional Record as a |
---|
39 | 39 | | memorial to the Congress of the United States of America. |
