45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Ramón Rentería retired from the El Paso Times on
67 April 26, 2015, drawing to a close a notable tenure as a newspaper
78 reporter and columnist that has spanned more than four decades; and
89 WHEREAS, A native of Valentine, Mr. Rentería began his
910 43-year career in journalism at the Clovis News Journal in New
1011 Mexico in 1972; in 1976, he joined the Las Cruces bureau of the El
1112 Paso Times, and a few years later, he joined the main office in El
1213 Paso to report on activities at city hall; and
1314 WHEREAS, Mr. Rentería went on to cover the education beat for
1415 nearly 20 years, earning a reputation as one of the best education
1516 reporters in the state; in 1989, his story "Separate and unequal:
1617 the story of Kelli, Veronica and school finance" won a number of
1718 local, state, and national awards for its exposure of inequality in
1819 school funding; and
1920 WHEREAS, Since 2008, Mr. Rentería has written a popular
2021 Sunday column for the paper, frequently employing a colloquial
2122 mixture of Spanish and English and sometimes making up his own words
2223 to express a particularly nuanced idea; in these columns, he often
2324 shared his unique gift for storytelling and served as a voice for
2425 the city's Hispanic community; in recent years, he has also worked
2526 as a general assignment reporter and as the books page editor; and
2627 WHEREAS, Calling himself a "semi-decent vato who tried to
2728 tell a few good yarns," Mr. Rentería has delighted, informed, and
2829 sometimes challenged his readers for more than four decades, and he
2930 may indeed take great pride in an outstanding career as he embarks
3031 upon the next exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore, be it
3132 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3233 Legislature hereby congratulate Ramón Rentería on his retirement
3334 from the El Paso Times and extend to him sincere best wishes for
3435 continued happiness; and, be it further
3536 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3637 prepared for Mr. Rentería as an expression of high regard by the
3738 Texas House of Representatives.
