45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A life dedicated to public service came to an end
67 with the death of Hemphill County sheriff Morse Burroughs on April
78 19, 2015, at the age of 62; and
89 WHEREAS, Morse Burroughs was born in Reno, Nevada, on
910 February 12, 1953, to Willis Burroughs Sr. and Alice Robinson
1011 Burroughs, and he grew up in San Juan, California; answering his
1112 nation's call to duty, he served in the United States Army during
1213 the Vietnam War; and
1314 WHEREAS, After attending the California Highway Patrol
1415 Academy in the mid-1970s, Mr. Burroughs worked in California for
1516 several years before moving to Texas, where he served with the Dumas
1617 Police Department from 1983 until 1987; he went on to serve with the
1718 Pampa Police Department from 1990 until 1997, and then with the Gray
1819 County Sheriff's Office until 2004; and
1920 WHEREAS, In 2005, Mr. Burroughs became the chief deputy in
2021 the Hemphill County Sheriff's Office, and he was appointed sheriff
2122 in 2011 before winning the office in an election the following year;
2223 he also served his community as a member of the board of directors
2324 of Tralee Crisis Center in Pampa and as a member of the Canadian
2425 Lions Club; at the time of his death, Sheriff Burroughs was planning
2526 to run for reelection; and
2627 WHEREAS, Admired for his kindness, generosity, and
2728 integrity, Morse Burroughs will long be remembered with respect and
2829 gratitude by the community he served so well, and he leaves behind a
2930 record of service that his loved ones can remember with pride; now,
3031 therefore, be it
3132 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3233 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Morse Burroughs and
3334 extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
3435 brother, Willis Burroughs Jr., and his wife, Sharon; to his sister,
3536 Christine Lewis; to his nephews, Gregory and Kirk Burroughs; to his
3637 nieces, Leigh Ann Collins and Natasha Burroughs; and to his other
3738 relatives and friends; and, be it further
3839 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3940 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4041 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sheriff
4142 Burroughs.
