5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A life dedicated to public service came to an end |

6 | 7 | | with the death of Hemphill County sheriff Morse Burroughs on April |

7 | 8 | | 19, 2015, at the age of 62; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Morse Burroughs was born in Reno, Nevada, on |
---|
9 | 10 | | February 12, 1953, to Willis Burroughs Sr. and Alice Robinson |
---|
10 | 11 | | Burroughs, and he grew up in San Juan, California; answering his |
---|
11 | 12 | | nation's call to duty, he served in the United States Army during |
---|
12 | 13 | | the Vietnam War; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, After attending the California Highway Patrol |
---|
14 | 15 | | Academy in the mid-1970s, Mr. Burroughs worked in California for |
---|
15 | 16 | | several years before moving to Texas, where he served with the Dumas |
---|
16 | 17 | | Police Department from 1983 until 1987; he went on to serve with the |
---|
17 | 18 | | Pampa Police Department from 1990 until 1997, and then with the Gray |
---|
18 | 19 | | County Sheriff's Office until 2004; and |
---|
19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, In 2005, Mr. Burroughs became the chief deputy in |
---|
20 | 21 | | the Hemphill County Sheriff's Office, and he was appointed sheriff |
---|
21 | 22 | | in 2011 before winning the office in an election the following year; |
---|
22 | 23 | | he also served his community as a member of the board of directors |
---|
23 | 24 | | of Tralee Crisis Center in Pampa and as a member of the Canadian |
---|
24 | 25 | | Lions Club; at the time of his death, Sheriff Burroughs was planning |
---|
25 | 26 | | to run for reelection; and |
---|
26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Admired for his kindness, generosity, and |
---|
27 | 28 | | integrity, Morse Burroughs will long be remembered with respect and |
---|
28 | 29 | | gratitude by the community he served so well, and he leaves behind a |
---|
29 | 30 | | record of service that his loved ones can remember with pride; now, |
---|
30 | 31 | | therefore, be it |

31 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
32 | 33 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Morse Burroughs and |
---|
33 | 34 | | extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |
---|
34 | 35 | | brother, Willis Burroughs Jr., and his wife, Sharon; to his sister, |
---|
35 | 36 | | Christine Lewis; to his nephews, Gregory and Kirk Burroughs; to his |
---|
36 | 37 | | nieces, Leigh Ann Collins and Natasha Burroughs; and to his other |
---|
37 | 38 | | relatives and friends; and, be it further |

38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
