45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley in Pharr has
67 provided a valuable service to area residents for three decades;

89 WHEREAS, Established in 1983 as the Pharr Area Food Pantry,
910 the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley was incorporated in 1986 and
1011 now serves as a clearinghouse to distribute donated, purchased, and
1112 prepared foods through a network of 230 partner agencies to 42,000
1213 residents per week in Hidalgo, Cameron, and Willacy Counties; one
1314 of the largest food banks in the Lone Star State, it supplies an
1415 average of 20 million pounds of food to people in the Rio Grande
1516 Valley annually; and
1617 WHEREAS, This nonprofit organization takes part in a number
1718 of worthwhile initiatives as a member of the Texas Food Bank Network
1819 and Feeding America, the nation's largest domestic hunger relief
1920 organization; moreover, it participates in Feeding America's Kids
2021 Cafe program, which helps ensure that children have access to
2122 nutritious foods; and
2223 WHEREAS, The food bank further serves the wider community
2324 through its Our School Tools program, which provides school
2425 supplies for students at more than 50 elementary schools in the
2526 area; it also works to educate families on the health advantages of
2627 fresh foods through its Healthy Living Program as well as its Valley
2728 Garden Project; and
2829 WHEREAS, With the worthy goal of alleviating hunger, the Food
2930 Bank of the Rio Grande Valley makes immeasurable contributions to
3031 the people of South Texas, and it indeed merits special recognition
3132 for its achievements and service; now, therefore, be it
3233 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3334 Legislature hereby honor the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley and
3435 extend to all those associated with the organization sincere best
3536 wishes for the future; and, be it further
3637 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3738 prepared for the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley as an expression
3839 of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
