| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A clinical, evidence-based discipline, music |

| 9 | 10 | | therapy is defined as the application of music by an accredited |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | professional for the purpose of achieving therapeutic goals; music |

| 11 | 12 | | therapy is used to treat persons of all ages and abilities in a |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | variety of settings, and it is shown to be a safe and cost-effective |

| 13 | 14 | | method of health care due to its capacity to address multiple |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | patient concerns without the need for medication; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Research has found music therapy to be successful in |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | helping patients with Alzheimer's disease to improve their |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | cognitive functioning, children with autism to better communicate, |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | and victims of stroke to regain their speech and mobility; |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | moreover, music intervention has been a valuable tool for many |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | clients in controlling chronic pain and managing anxiety and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | depression; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, More than 40,000 Texans receive services from music |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | therapists each year; certified practitioners must complete a |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | degree in music therapy at a college or university approved by the |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | American Music Therapy Association and are credentialed by the |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Certification Board for Music Therapists; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Degrees in music therapy are offered at a number of |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | institutions of higher learning in Texas, and many graduates of |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | these institutions go on to become contractors and operate small |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | businesses that contribute to the economies of their community and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | state; and |

| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Texans from all walks of life have benefited |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | immeasurably from the techniques used by skilled music therapists, |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | and it is a privilege to join in commending them for the innovative |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | services they provide; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 3, 2015, as Music Therapy Day |

| 38 | 39 | | in Texas and extend sincere best wishes to music therapists across |

| 39 | 40 | | the Lone Star State for success with their important work. |
