| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The 64th annual National Day of Prayer is taking |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Civic prayers and national days of prayer have an |

| 8 | 9 | | enduring history in America and date back to 1775, when the Second |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | forming a nation; and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of prayer |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | and fasting in 1863; the annual National Day of Prayer was |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | established when President Harry Truman signed a joint resolution |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | by Congress in 1952; the permanent date was set in 1988 by President |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | Ronald Reagan, who chose the first Thursday in May for the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | observance; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Prayer has remained an integral part of this |

| 18 | 19 | | country's rich history, and the National Day of Prayer is an |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | opportunity for citizens of all faiths to gather and express |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | gratitude for the many blessings and liberties that we have and to |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | pray for this nation, its people, and its leaders; now, therefore, |

| 23 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 24 | 25 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 7, 2015, as National Day of Prayer |

| 25 | 26 | | in Texas; and, be it further |

| 26 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That all Texans be encouraged to set aside a |

| 27 | 28 | | particular moment on this day to participate in this meaningful |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | spiritual event and to encourage their friends and neighbors to |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | observe this year's National Day of Prayer according to their own |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | faith or practice. |
