45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The 64th annual National Day of Prayer is taking
67 place on May 7, 2015; and
78 WHEREAS, Civic prayers and national days of prayer have an
89 enduring history in America and date back to 1775, when the Second
910 Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in
1011 forming a nation; and
1112 WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of prayer
1213 and fasting in 1863; the annual National Day of Prayer was
1314 established when President Harry Truman signed a joint resolution
1415 by Congress in 1952; the permanent date was set in 1988 by President
1516 Ronald Reagan, who chose the first Thursday in May for the
1617 observance; and
1718 WHEREAS, Prayer has remained an integral part of this
1819 country's rich history, and the National Day of Prayer is an
1920 opportunity for citizens of all faiths to gather and express
2021 gratitude for the many blessings and liberties that we have and to
2122 pray for this nation, its people, and its leaders; now, therefore,
2223 be it
2324 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
2425 Legislature hereby recognize May 7, 2015, as National Day of Prayer
2526 in Texas; and, be it further
2627 RESOLVED, That all Texans be encouraged to set aside a
2728 particular moment on this day to participate in this meaningful
2829 spiritual event and to encourage their friends and neighbors to
2930 observe this year's National Day of Prayer according to their own
3031 faith or practice.
