5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The city of Port Isabel lost a highly regarded |

6 | 7 | | public servant with the passing of former mayor Quirino Z. Martinez |

7 | 8 | | on March 26, 2015, at the age of 76; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of Candelario and Mariana Zurita Martinez, |

9 | 10 | | Quirino Martinez was born and raised in Port Isabel; he began his |
---|
10 | 11 | | career in local government in 1970, when he was elected as a city |
---|
11 | 12 | | commissioner; he served for six years in that office and held the |
---|
12 | 13 | | title of mayor pro tempore for four years; elected as the city's |
---|
13 | 14 | | mayor in 1976, he served four consecutive terms as well as a fifth |
---|
14 | 15 | | term from 1996 to 1998; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, During his noteworthy tenure, Mayor Martinez worked |
---|
16 | 17 | | diligently to improve the quality of life of Port Isabel residents; |
---|
17 | 18 | | he played a key role in a number of essential civic projects, |
---|
18 | 19 | | including the construction of a new library, community center, and |
---|
19 | 20 | | chamber of commerce complex, the establishment of the Port Isabel |
---|
20 | 21 | | Health Clinic and Laguna Madre Park, and the renovation of |
---|
21 | 22 | | Washington, Beulah Lee, and Pompano Parks; he also helped bring |
---|
22 | 23 | | about the expansion of the city's museums and public library; his |
---|
23 | 24 | | many accomplishments were honored in 2011 with the dedication of |
---|
24 | 25 | | the Mayor Quirino Z. Martinez Park Pavilion at Washington Park; and |

25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Martinez enjoyed the |

26 | 27 | | love and support of his wife of 60 years, Julia, and he took great |
---|
27 | 28 | | pride in his children, Beatriz, Quirino, Freddy, and Noe; his life |

28 | 29 | | was further enriched by his many grandchildren, |

29 | 30 | | great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Although Quirino Martinez will be deeply missed, the |

31 | 32 | | memory of this remarkable civic leader will long endure in the |

32 | 33 | | hearts of the many people who benefited from his commitment to serve |

33 | 34 | | the greater good; now, therefore, be it |
