45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life came to a close with the
67 passing of Dr. Eugene B. Smith of College Station on April 21,
78 2015, at the age of 83; and
89 WHEREAS, Born to Robert and Thelma Smith in Houston on
910 December 28, 1931, "Gene" Smith spent his formative years in
1011 Nederland; he attended Texas A&M University, graduating with a
1112 bachelor's degree, and went on to join the U.S. Army Signal Corps;
1213 and
1314 WHEREAS, After completing his military service, he moved to
1415 Houston to work for IBM; he then went back to Texas A&M, where he
1516 earned his master's degree and Ph.D. and subsequently found a
1617 position as an associate professor in the school of business; in
1718 1976, he left Texas and moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, to become
1819 a management analyst for the United States Department of
1920 Agriculture; he returned seven years later and took a job with the
2021 Texas Agricultural Extension Service in College Station, working
2122 there for more than a decade until his retirement in 1994; and
2223 WHEREAS, Dr. Smith married the love of his life, the former
2324 Altha Hall, on June 22, 1957, and the couple shared a rewarding
2425 union that spanned 57 years; they were the proud parents of a
2526 daughter, Kimberly, and with the passing years, they had the
2627 pleasure of watching their family grow to include two
2728 granddaughters, Emily and Melissa; Dr. Smith enjoyed spending time
2829 with his family and friends, playing golf, and traveling with his
2930 wife; and
3031 WHEREAS, This warm and caring gentleman touched the lives of
3132 many during his journey on this earth, and those who were privileged
3233 to know him will always remember him with great admiration and
3334 affection; now, therefore, be it
3435 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3536 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Eugene B. Smith
3637 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
3738 wife, Altha Smith; to his daughter, Kim Hord, and her husband,
3839 Allen; to his granddaughters, Emily and Melissa; to his brother,
3940 Jerry Lynn Smith, and his wife, Judy; and to his other relatives and
4041 many friends; and, be it further
4142 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4243 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4344 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Eugene
4445 B. "Gene" Smith.
