5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life came to a close with the |

6 | 7 | | passing of Dr. Eugene B. Smith of College Station on April 21, |

7 | 8 | | 2015, at the age of 83; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born to Robert and Thelma Smith in Houston on |
---|
9 | 10 | | December 28, 1931, "Gene" Smith spent his formative years in |
---|
10 | 11 | | Nederland; he attended Texas A&M University, graduating with a |
---|
11 | 12 | | bachelor's degree, and went on to join the U.S. Army Signal Corps; |
---|
12 | 13 | | and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, After completing his military service, he moved to |
---|
14 | 15 | | Houston to work for IBM; he then went back to Texas A&M, where he |
---|
15 | 16 | | earned his master's degree and Ph.D. and subsequently found a |
---|
16 | 17 | | position as an associate professor in the school of business; in |
---|
17 | 18 | | 1976, he left Texas and moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, to become |
---|
18 | 19 | | a management analyst for the United States Department of |
---|
19 | 20 | | Agriculture; he returned seven years later and took a job with the |
---|
20 | 21 | | Texas Agricultural Extension Service in College Station, working |
---|
21 | 22 | | there for more than a decade until his retirement in 1994; and |

22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Smith married the love of his life, the former |
---|
23 | 24 | | Altha Hall, on June 22, 1957, and the couple shared a rewarding |
---|
24 | 25 | | union that spanned 57 years; they were the proud parents of a |
---|
25 | 26 | | daughter, Kimberly, and with the passing years, they had the |
---|
26 | 27 | | pleasure of watching their family grow to include two |
---|
27 | 28 | | granddaughters, Emily and Melissa; Dr. Smith enjoyed spending time |
---|
28 | 29 | | with his family and friends, playing golf, and traveling with his |
---|
29 | 30 | | wife; and |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, This warm and caring gentleman touched the lives of |
---|
31 | 32 | | many during his journey on this earth, and those who were privileged |

32 | 33 | | to know him will always remember him with great admiration and |

33 | 34 | | affection; now, therefore, be it |

34 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

35 | 36 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Eugene B. Smith |

36 | 37 | | and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his |

37 | 38 | | wife, Altha Smith; to his daughter, Kim Hord, and her husband, |

38 | 39 | | Allen; to his granddaughters, Emily and Melissa; to his brother, |

39 | 40 | | Jerry Lynn Smith, and his wife, Judy; and to his other relatives and |
