| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, From his courageous efforts in two wars to his work |

| 6 | 7 | | as an elected official and volunteer, Eddie Janek Sr. of Galveston |

| 7 | 8 | | has devoted himself to serving the greater good, and he is indeed |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | deserving of recognition for his many accomplishments; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, After growing up on a farm near West during the Great |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Depression, Eddie Janek volunteered for the U.S. Navy shortly after |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | the United States entered World War II; he was just 15 years old at |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | the time, so he fibbed about his age and doctored his Catholic |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | confirmation records in order to fight for his country; he spent |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | four years in the war's Pacific Theater, where he participated in |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | landings in Leyte and Peleliu, and he remained a member of the navy |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | through the Korean War, earning the rank of ship's serviceman |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | second class; for his valorous service, he received numerous |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | military citations, including the Philippine Liberation Medal and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | presidential unit citations from President Franklin D. Roosevelt |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | and from the president of South Korea; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, After concluding his tenure in the armed forces, |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Mr. Janek settled in Galveston and went on to successfully pursue a |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | career in the telecommunications industry, eventually starting his |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | own company; for 16 years, he worked in behalf of area residents as |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | county commissioner, and he has also benefited his community in a |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | number of other ways, from raising funds for a neighbor in need to |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | coaching Little League, Pony League, and American Legion baseball |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | teams for several decades; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Janek and the love of his life, the former Doris |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | Denke, shared a rewarding marriage that spanned more than six |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | decades before Mrs. Janek passed away in 2015; the couple raised |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | three sons, Ed, Kyle, and Craig, and through the years, Mr. Janek |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | has seen his family grow to include six grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Eddie Janek has contributed to his fellow citizens |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | through a lifetime of purposeful endeavor, and in so doing, he has |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | set an inspiring example of leadership, integrity, and generosity; |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby honor Eddie Janek Sr. for his service to his |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | community and to his country and extend to him sincere best wishes |

| 41 | 42 | | for the future; and, be it further |
