5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, For the past half-century, Doris Padgett of Mesquite |

6 | 7 | | has greatly benefited her fellow citizens through her dedicated |

7 | 8 | | service as the founding librarian of the Sunnyvale Public Library; |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Padgett was hired to run the library when it was |

10 | 11 | | established in 1965, and at the age of 90, she continues to assist |
---|
11 | 12 | | its operations on a half-time basis; although the facility is |
---|
12 | 13 | | small, she has worked tirelessly to ensure it meets the needs of |
---|
13 | 14 | | area residents, and in addition to books and other media, it offers |
---|
14 | 15 | | computers and a children's play space; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In the 1960s, the Sunnyvale Garden Club started a |
---|
16 | 17 | | petition drive for a library, and one of the members encouraged |
---|
17 | 18 | | Ms. Padgett, an avid reader, to apply for the job of sole librarian; |

18 | 19 | | she was hired and quickly taught herself how to run the facility, |
---|
19 | 20 | | which had an annual book budget of $5,000 and occupied a 1912 |
---|
20 | 21 | | schoolhouse; in 1983, she guided the move to the present location in |
---|
21 | 22 | | a building shared with the fire station; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Padgett ran the library singlehandedly until 10 |

23 | 24 | | years ago, when another employee was added; over the years, she has |
---|
24 | 25 | | made it a welcoming, quiet oasis for book lovers and those |
---|
25 | 26 | | conducting research in the stacks or on computers; many local |
---|
26 | 27 | | patrons choose it over other nearby facilities because she is their |
---|
27 | 28 | | favorite librarian; and |

28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The Sunnyvale Public Library plays a vital role in |

29 | 30 | | the life of the community, and Doris Padgett has contributed |
---|
30 | 31 | | immeasurably to the vitality of this institution through her |
---|
31 | 32 | | skilled and devoted stewardship; now, therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby honor Doris Padgett for her 50 years of service |

34 | 35 | | as the founding librarian of the Sunnyvale Public Library and |

35 | 36 | | extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
