45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, In 2011, Del Mar College in Corpus Christi added an
67 associate's degree in Mexican-American Studies to better serve area
78 residents; and
89 WHEREAS, Students in the program learn to summarize
910 demographic trends, to recognize the main elements of
1011 Mexican-American aesthetics in literature, language, music, visual
1112 arts, and cultural practices and to demonstrate a comprehensive
1213 understanding of the historical, political, and contemporary
1314 experiences of Mexican-American men and women in South Texas and
1415 throughout the United States; designated as fully transferable to
1516 Texas public colleges and universities by the Texas Higher
1617 Education Coordinating Board, courses further prepare students by
1718 equipping them with oral, writing, and research skills; and
1819 WHEREAS, Students take these classes for a variety of
1920 reasons, with some committed to earning the associate's degree in
2021 Mexican-American Studies and others interested in fulfilling
2122 creative arts, language, social sciences, or American history
2223 requirements for other majors; a number of students choose to
2324 enroll in these courses to earn college credit through the Early
2425 College Program, to transfer to a four-year university, to become
2526 more competitive in the job market, or to explore the topic through
2627 the Career and Community Education Program; and
2728 WHEREAS, Dedicated to engaging the community, the program
2829 also hosts events that expand awareness of the Mexican-American
2930 population and major demographic changes in the nation; to that
3031 end, the Mexican-American Studies Program cosponsored a video
3132 preview and discussion panel on the PBS documentary series "Latino
3233 Americans" with KEDT-TV in 2013; the following year, it went on to
3334 sponsor the first Del Mar College Mexican-American Studies Program
3435 Summer Seminar; and
3536 WHEREAS, The Del Mar College Mexican-American Studies
3637 Program is playing a vital role in the preservation and celebration
3738 of the Lone Star State's Hispanic heritage, and it is indeed fitting
3839 to honor the initiative for its support of the college's emphasis as
3940 a Hispanic-Serving Institution; now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4142 Legislature hereby recognize the Del Mar College Mexican-American
4243 Studies Program for its contributions to the community and extend
4344 to all those associated with the program sincere best wishes for
4445 continued success; and, be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for Del Mar College as an expression of high regard by the
4748 Texas House of Representatives.
