| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, David Smolik is retiring as principal of Sacred |

| 6 | 7 | | Heart Catholic School in Hallettsville after 45 years of exemplary |

| 7 | 8 | | service in education; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Smolik began his career as a junior high |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | teacher, working in the Weslaco and North Forest Independent School |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Districts; he then went on to take positions as assistant principal |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | of Northwood Middle School and Smiley High School and as principal |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | of Kirby Middle School; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Smolik moved back to his hometown in 1981 to |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | teach world history at Hallettsville High School before becoming |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | principal of his alma mater, Sacred Heart Catholic School, in 1984; |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | during his three decades as the school's principal, he has helped |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | expand its academic programs while bringing about numerous |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | additions and improvements to the campus; and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of his tenure, he has consistently |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | demonstrated a keen interest in the endeavors of his students, |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | speaking with them as they come to school, visiting the classrooms, |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | cheering them on at extracurricular events, and keeping in touch |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | even after their high school graduation; he is known for proudly |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | displaying his Sacred Heart pride through his trademark blue vest |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | and for presenting royal blue Sacred Heart pencils to lucky |

| 26 | 27 | | recipients; and |

| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Smolik has also given generously of his time and |

| 28 | 29 | | talents to such worthy organizations as the Hallettsville Lions |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | Club, the Fine Arts Executive Committee of the Texas Association of |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | Private and Parochial Schools, and the Knights of Columbus, which |

| 31 | 32 | | he has served as youth director; in addition, he acts as |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | extraordinary minister in his parish; and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of his commitment to his students and |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | to the larger community, Mr. Smolik has received the Lions Club |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | Melvin Jones Foundation Award as well as the National Outstanding |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | Educator Award for Catholic Secondary Education from the National |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | Catholic Education Association; and |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Through his dedication, his talent as an educator |

| 39 | 40 | | and administrator, and his personal concern for others, David |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | Smolik has made a positive and lasting difference in the lives of |

| 41 | 42 | | his students and their families, and he may take well-deserved |

| 42 | 43 | | pride in his outstanding record of achievement; now, therefore, be |

| 44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 45 | 46 | | Legislature hereby congratulate David Smolik on his retirement as |
