H.R. No. 2785 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, For 65 years, families of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Houston have joined together to celebrate their faith; and WHEREAS, Organized on June 26, 1950, the church was led by Father John Cummings, who oversaw an original congregation of approximately 700 families; the first church structure was completed in September of that same year, and the St. Francis of Assisi School was opened in 1955; a new sanctuary was dedicated in 1966 to accommodate the growing needs of the parish, and the church's membership has continued to flourish over the ensuing half-century; and WHEREAS, Over the years, the church has also benefited from the able leadership of Fathers Robert Blankenstein, Alfred Greenwald, Joseph Culver, Marion Polker, Michael Doerflein, Thomas Miller, Patrick Wells, and Romanus Muoneke, and today, that tradition of service and support continues under the direction of Father Edmund Nnadozie; and WHEREAS, United by their shared faith, the congregants of this notable house of worship have established a variety of commendable programs that foster fellowship and offer help to those in need; and WHEREAS, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church has long contributed to its community, with countless area Catholics finding spiritual inspiration and guidance there, and its continued existence is a tribute to the unwavering commitment of its members, both past and present; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 65th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and extend to its parishioners sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
