8 | 9 | | veterans by hosting a luncheon, "Honoring Our Veterans," on May 30, |

9 | 10 | | 2015, at the Tracy Gee Community Center; and |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Chinese Americans have served in every American |
---|
11 | 12 | | conflict since the Civil War, but it was not until World War II that |
---|
12 | 13 | | many of them were allowed to serve in combat; approximately 20,000 |
---|
13 | 14 | | Chinese Americans took part in the war, mostly as members of the |
---|
14 | 15 | | U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Air Forces; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Among their number was Captain Francis B. Wai, who |

16 | 17 | | displayed conspicuous bravery while fighting in the Philippines in |

17 | 18 | | 1944 and who was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service |

18 | 19 | | Cross, which was upgraded in 2000 to a Medal of Honor; Commander |

19 | 20 | | Gordon Pai'ea Chung-Hoon of the U.S.S. Sigsbee received the Navy |

20 | 21 | | Cross for leading the efforts to save his ship after a kamikaze |

21 | 22 | | attack; he ended his career in 1959 as a rear admiral; and |

22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Chinese American women also served during World War |

23 | 24 | | II in the Military Intelligence Service of the Women's Army Corps |

24 | 25 | | and in the U.S. Army Air Forces; Maggie Gee and Hazel Ying Lee of the |

25 | 26 | | Women Airforce Service Pilots flew logistics missions, and Ms. Gee |

26 | 27 | | trained male pilots for combat; and |

27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, All Americans owe a profound debt of gratitude to |

28 | 29 | | those Chinese Americans who wore our nation's uniform during World |

29 | 30 | | War II and other conflicts, and the event in Houston is a fitting |

30 | 31 | | opportunity to recognize their heroism and sacrifice in this |

31 | 32 | | country's time of need; now, therefore, be it |

32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the World War II memorial luncheon |
