5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their |

6 | 7 | | memories of Oris G. Green of Houston, who died on March 4, 2015, at |

7 | 8 | | the age of 71; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Oris Green was born in Houston's Fifth Ward on |
---|
9 | 10 | | January 13, 1944, to Oris Green Sr. and Katie Green; after |
---|
10 | 11 | | graduating from Phillis Wheatley High School, he received a |
---|
11 | 12 | | football scholarship from Southern University in Baton Rouge, |
---|
12 | 13 | | Louisiana, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business |
---|
13 | 14 | | administration and served in the U.S. Army Reserve; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Green and his wife, Alma, shared a rewarding |
---|
15 | 16 | | marriage spanning many years together until his passing, and he was |
---|
16 | 17 | | the proud father of three daughters, Yolanda, Deneitra, and |
---|
17 | 18 | | Stephanie; later in life, he was blessed with seven grandchildren |
---|
18 | 19 | | and a great-grandchild; and |
---|
19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, After graduating from college, Mr. Green moved with |
---|
20 | 21 | | his family to Dallas, where he became the first African American |
---|
21 | 22 | | marketing representative for the Southwest District of Mobil Oil; |
---|
22 | 23 | | he went on to work for Fox and Jacobs Homes and Xerox, and in 1975, |
---|
23 | 24 | | he returned to Houston, where he worked for Southern Pacific |
---|
24 | 25 | | Railroad and ran his own company, Green's Iron Work and Burglar |
---|
25 | 26 | | Bars; he was also employed by the Aldine Independent School |
---|
26 | 27 | | District and retired from the district as superintendent for school |
---|
27 | 28 | | expansion and improvements; and |

28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, A man of strong religious faith, Mr. Green was a |

29 | 30 | | longtime member of Sloan Memorial United Methodist Church, where he |
---|
30 | 31 | | served as a trustee and a member of the United Methodist Men; in |
---|
31 | 32 | | addition, he ministered to men with cancer at the Life (Cancer) |
---|
32 | 33 | | Ministry of Windsor Village United Methodist Church; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Green was an expert cook who often raised money |
---|
34 | 35 | | for his church with his popular barbecue and fish fry dinners, and |
---|
35 | 36 | | he was an enthusiastic and expert gardener who delighted in sharing |
---|
36 | 37 | | his homegrown produce with his family, his friends, and people in |
---|
37 | 38 | | need; and |

38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Oris Green lived a rich and purposeful life, and |

39 | 40 | | memories of his warmth, compassion, and concern for others will |
---|
40 | 41 | | continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, |

41 | 42 | | therefore, be it |

42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Oris G. Green and |

44 | 45 | | extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |

45 | 46 | | wife, Alma Green; to his mother, Katie Green; to his daughters, |

46 | 47 | | Yolanda Hempstead Brown, Deneitra Hutchinson and her husband, Jeff, |

47 | 48 | | and Stephanie Lee; to his sister, Maudell Simon, and her husband, |
