45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their
67 memories of Oris G. Green of Houston, who died on March 4, 2015, at
78 the age of 71; and
89 WHEREAS, Oris Green was born in Houston's Fifth Ward on
910 January 13, 1944, to Oris Green Sr. and Katie Green; after
1011 graduating from Phillis Wheatley High School, he received a
1112 football scholarship from Southern University in Baton Rouge,
1213 Louisiana, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business
1314 administration and served in the U.S. Army Reserve; and
1415 WHEREAS, Mr. Green and his wife, Alma, shared a rewarding
1516 marriage spanning many years together until his passing, and he was
1617 the proud father of three daughters, Yolanda, Deneitra, and
1718 Stephanie; later in life, he was blessed with seven grandchildren
1819 and a great-grandchild; and
1920 WHEREAS, After graduating from college, Mr. Green moved with
2021 his family to Dallas, where he became the first African American
2122 marketing representative for the Southwest District of Mobil Oil;
2223 he went on to work for Fox and Jacobs Homes and Xerox, and in 1975,
2324 he returned to Houston, where he worked for Southern Pacific
2425 Railroad and ran his own company, Green's Iron Work and Burglar
2526 Bars; he was also employed by the Aldine Independent School
2627 District and retired from the district as superintendent for school
2728 expansion and improvements; and
2829 WHEREAS, A man of strong religious faith, Mr. Green was a
2930 longtime member of Sloan Memorial United Methodist Church, where he
3031 served as a trustee and a member of the United Methodist Men; in
3132 addition, he ministered to men with cancer at the Life (Cancer)
3233 Ministry of Windsor Village United Methodist Church; and
3334 WHEREAS, Mr. Green was an expert cook who often raised money
3435 for his church with his popular barbecue and fish fry dinners, and
3536 he was an enthusiastic and expert gardener who delighted in sharing
3637 his homegrown produce with his family, his friends, and people in
3738 need; and
3839 WHEREAS, Oris Green lived a rich and purposeful life, and
3940 memories of his warmth, compassion, and concern for others will
4041 continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now,
4142 therefore, be it
4243 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4344 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Oris G. Green and
4445 extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
4546 wife, Alma Green; to his mother, Katie Green; to his daughters,
4647 Yolanda Hempstead Brown, Deneitra Hutchinson and her husband, Jeff,
4748 and Stephanie Lee; to his sister, Maudell Simon, and her husband,
4849 Junius; to his grandchildren, Paul Brown, Shallanie Martin, Braxton
4950 Scott, Christopher, Cameron, and Noah Hutchinson, and Nicholas Lee;
5051 to his great-grandson, C. J. Martin; to his nephew, Junius Simon;
5152 and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
5253 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5354 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5455 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Oris
5556 G. Green.
