45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, J. J. Avila has distinguished himself through his
67 performance as a high school and college basketball player, and he
78 is indeed worthy of special recognition; and
89 WHEREAS, Mr. Avila was a four-year starter for the McAllen
910 High School basketball team, and he twice led the Bulldogs to the
1011 regional finals of the University Interscholastic League state
1112 playoffs; he finished his high school career as McAllen's all-time
1213 leading scorer, and he was recognized for his talents on the
1314 hardwood with a number of prestigious awards, including two
1415 All-Valley Player of the Year Awards, District 30-5A MVP honors,
1516 and selection to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches
1617 All-State team; and
1718 WHEREAS, Continuing his athletic career at the collegiate
1819 level, Mr. Avila chose to attend the U.S. Naval Academy as a member
1920 of the basketball team; he went on to enjoy one of the top debut
2021 seasons in Navy history, shining in numerous statistical categories
2122 and leading all freshmen in scoring for the Patriot League; he
2223 excelled during his sophomore campaign as well, averaging 15.9
2324 points and 7.2 rebounds per game to lead the Midshipmen; he
2425 eventually left the academy and moved back to McAllen, where he
2526 enrolled at South Texas College and worked diligently to refine his
2627 game by competing in city leagues; eager to reenter the world of
2728 major college basketball, he accepted an athletic scholarship to
2829 Colorado State University for the 2013-2014 season; and
2930 WHEREAS, This gifted player quickly became a valuable asset
3031 for the Rams, starting all 32 games as a junior and securing a spot
3132 on the third team All-Mountain West squad; Mr. Avila followed that
3233 performance with an outstanding senior season, helping the team
3334 compile an impressive 27-7 overall record and clinch the No. 1 seed
3435 in the National Invitation Tournament, and earning all-conference
3536 honors for the second consecutive year; and
3637 WHEREAS, J. J. Avila has demonstrated admirable dedication in
3738 pursuit of his goals, and he may reflect with justifiable pride on
3839 his achievements as he looks ahead to a bright and promising future;
3940 now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4142 Legislature hereby commend J. J. Avila for his achievements as a
4243 student-athlete and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
4344 success; and, be it further
4445 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4546 prepared for Mr. Avila as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4647 House of Representatives.
