5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, J. J. Avila has distinguished himself through his |

6 | 7 | | performance as a high school and college basketball player, and he |

7 | 8 | | is indeed worthy of special recognition; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Avila was a four-year starter for the McAllen |
---|
9 | 10 | | High School basketball team, and he twice led the Bulldogs to the |
---|
10 | 11 | | regional finals of the University Interscholastic League state |
---|
11 | 12 | | playoffs; he finished his high school career as McAllen's all-time |
---|
12 | 13 | | leading scorer, and he was recognized for his talents on the |
---|
13 | 14 | | hardwood with a number of prestigious awards, including two |
---|
14 | 15 | | All-Valley Player of the Year Awards, District 30-5A MVP honors, |
---|
15 | 16 | | and selection to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches |

17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Continuing his athletic career at the collegiate |

18 | 19 | | level, Mr. Avila chose to attend the U.S. Naval Academy as a member |

19 | 20 | | of the basketball team; he went on to enjoy one of the top debut |

20 | 21 | | seasons in Navy history, shining in numerous statistical categories |

21 | 22 | | and leading all freshmen in scoring for the Patriot League; he |

22 | 23 | | excelled during his sophomore campaign as well, averaging 15.9 |

23 | 24 | | points and 7.2 rebounds per game to lead the Midshipmen; he |

24 | 25 | | eventually left the academy and moved back to McAllen, where he |

25 | 26 | | enrolled at South Texas College and worked diligently to refine his |

26 | 27 | | game by competing in city leagues; eager to reenter the world of |

27 | 28 | | major college basketball, he accepted an athletic scholarship to |

28 | 29 | | Colorado State University for the 2013-2014 season; and |

29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, This gifted player quickly became a valuable asset |

30 | 31 | | for the Rams, starting all 32 games as a junior and securing a spot |

31 | 32 | | on the third team All-Mountain West squad; Mr. Avila followed that |

32 | 33 | | performance with an outstanding senior season, helping the team |

33 | 34 | | compile an impressive 27-7 overall record and clinch the No. 1 seed |

34 | 35 | | in the National Invitation Tournament, and earning all-conference |
---|
35 | 36 | | honors for the second consecutive year; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, J. J. Avila has demonstrated admirable dedication in |

37 | 38 | | pursuit of his goals, and he may reflect with justifiable pride on |

38 | 39 | | his achievements as he looks ahead to a bright and promising future; |
