5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life has drawn to a close with |

6 | 7 | | the death of business and civic leader Tracy Wayne Edwards of Dumas |

7 | 8 | | on February 7, 2015, at the age of 85; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Wayne Edwards was born near Littlefield on September |
---|
9 | 10 | | 15, 1929, to Dick and Ruth Edwards, and he acquired a strong work |
---|
10 | 11 | | ethic at an early age by working on his parents' cotton farm; after |
---|
11 | 12 | | high school, he attended Amarillo College and went to work for |
---|
12 | 13 | | Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In 1949, Mr. Edwards moved to Dumas, where he met |
---|
14 | 15 | | his future wife, Fern Covington; they married in 1951, beginning a |
---|
15 | 16 | | journey together that spanned more than six decades; the couple |
---|
16 | 17 | | were blessed with four children, Belinda, Teresa, Tracy, and Gary, |
---|
17 | 18 | | and later welcomed into their family four grandsons and four |
---|
18 | 19 | | great-grandchildren; and |
---|
19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Edwards embarked on a new career in 1953, when |
---|
20 | 21 | | he joined the sales staff of Scott Spencer Motors; he went on to |
---|
21 | 22 | | work for Steve Johnston Chevrolet, and he cofounded Witt-Edwards |
---|
22 | 23 | | Pontiac and Buick in 1964; eight years later, Mr. Edwards opened |
---|
23 | 24 | | his own dealership, Edwards Chrysler, Plymouth, and Dodge, which |
---|
24 | 25 | | remains in the family today; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, A leader in his profession, Mr. Edwards served on |
---|
26 | 27 | | the board of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association and |
---|
27 | 28 | | represented the Panhandle in the Chrysler Corporation Dealers |
---|
28 | 29 | | Association; he also served on the Chrysler Corporation Dealers |
---|
29 | 30 | | Council; and |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Edwards contributed to his community as well, |
---|
31 | 32 | | serving as president of the Jaycees, the Noon Lions Club, the Dumas |
---|
32 | 33 | | long-range planning commission, and the Moore County Hospital |
---|
33 | 34 | | Board; he also served on the Dumas Industrial Development Board, |
---|
34 | 35 | | the City Zoning Board, and the Moore County Fair Association board; |
---|
35 | 36 | | he was a charter member, and the longest serving member, of the |
---|
36 | 37 | | Window on the Plains Museum board, and he headed the special |
---|
37 | 38 | | division of the United Way, where for two years in a row he helped |
---|
38 | 39 | | the group meet 100 percent of its fund-raising target; and |
---|
39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, A man of strong religious faith, Mr. Edwards was a |
---|
40 | 41 | | Sunday school superintendent, a youth fellowship sponsor, and a |
---|
41 | 42 | | member of the board of stewards of First Methodist Church; he later |
---|
42 | 43 | | joined First Baptist Church, where he was chair of the deacon board; |
---|

44 | 45 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan's many honors include the Joyce |
---|
45 | 46 | | Dillow Heritage Award, the Good Neighbor Award, and the Citizen of |
---|
46 | 47 | | the Year Award from the Dumas Chamber of Commerce; he also received |
---|
47 | 48 | | the Melvin Jones Service Award from the Lions Club and a lifetime |
---|
48 | 49 | | membership from the U.S. Jaycees and the Dumas Noon Lions Club, and |
---|
49 | 50 | | in 1986 he was nominated as Distinguished Texan of the Year by the |
---|
50 | 51 | | Dumas Board of Realtors; and |
---|
51 | 52 | | WHEREAS, A devoted family man, a respected businessman, and a |
---|
52 | 53 | | model of civic engagement, Wayne Edwards leaves behind a legacy of |
---|
53 | 54 | | service to others that will continue to inspire all those who knew |
---|
54 | 55 | | and loved him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
55 | 56 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

56 | 57 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to Tracy Wayne Edwards and extend |
---|
57 | 58 | | sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his wife, Fern |

58 | 59 | | Covington Edwards; to his daughters, Belinda Brice and Teresa |

59 | 60 | | Edwards; to his sons, Tracy Edwards and his wife, Frieda, and Gary |
