| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The year 2014 marks the 75th anniversary of Cal |

| 6 | 7 | | Farley's Boys Ranch in Amarillo; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, An accomplished civic leader and respected |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | businessman, Cal Farley was first inspired to help children in the |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Amarillo area after noticing young boys hanging around the local |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | baseball park instead of attending school; he later learned that |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | many of the boys came from disadvantaged households, and he |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | subsequently formed the Maverick Club and Kids, Inc., to provide |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | the children with access to extracurricular activities, as well as |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | food, clothing, and medical services; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In pursuit of his goal of a more permanent sanctuary |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | for troubled youth in the community, Mr. Farley secured a donation |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | of 120 acres of land from a local rancher in 1938; he began housing |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | boys on the property the following year, and on March 14, 1939, Boys |

| 19 | 20 | | Ranch received its original charter from the Texas secretary of |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | state; the ranch garnered significant statewide and nationwide |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | recognition for its efforts over the ensuing years, and by 1947 some |

| 22 | 23 | | 100 boys were residing at Cal Farley's Boys Ranch; and |

| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Today, with almost three times that number in its |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | care, Cal Farley's stands as one of the country's largest privately |

| 25 | 26 | | funded child and family service providers, offering residential, |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | spiritual, educational, and community-based services at no cost to |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | the families; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Thousands of young people from across the nation |

| 29 | 30 | | have found hope, opportunity, and "A Shirttail to Hang Onto" at Cal |

| 30 | 31 | | Farley's Boys Ranch, and it is indeed fitting to honor the proud |

| 31 | 32 | | legacy of Cal Farley's on the occasion of this significant |

| 32 | 33 | | milestone; now, therefore, be it |

| 33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of Cal Farley's |
