| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Mosquito Control Division of Harris County |

| 6 | 6 | | Public Health and Environmental Services is marking its 50th |

| 7 | 7 | | anniversary in 2015; and |

| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, This critical unit was established in 1965 in |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | response to an outbreak of St. Louis encephalitis in the Harris |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | County area the previous year; originally organized as a county |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | department, Mosquito Control became a division of Harris County |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Public Health and Environmental Services in 1995; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Nationally recognized for its efforts, Mosquito |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Control was the first group to document the existence of the Asian |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | tiger mosquito in the continental United States, a discovery it |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | made in 1985; the division employs sophisticated research methods |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and technologies to prevent and control a wide array of ailments |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | spread by mosquitos, such as West Nile virus, St. Louis |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | encephalitis, dengue fever, and chikungunya; moreover, the unit has |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | partnered with a number of entities, including universities, the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Centers for Disease |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Control and Prevention, to find effective ways to deal with |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | mosquito-borne diseases and the risks they pose to public health; |

| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Mosquito Control Division |

| 26 | 26 | | has contributed significantly to protecting the health and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | well-being of Harris County residents, and it is indeed fitting |

| 28 | 28 | | that the division's staff be commended on their outstanding work; |

| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
