| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The Caller-Times/Citgo South Texas Distinguished |

| 10 | 11 | | Scholars program was established to reward local students who have |

| 11 | 12 | | demonstrated excellence in such areas as academics, athletics, |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | leadership, and community service; since its inception in 1988, |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | some 480 young men and women have been selected for this prestigious |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | honor, with the winners each receiving a stipend to assist with |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | college expenses; and |

| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Dr. Marita Rafael and Alexander |

| 17 | 18 | | Rafael, Maria Rafael is a senior at King High School, where she |

| 18 | 19 | | maintains a 105 grade point average and ranks sixth in her class of |

| 19 | 20 | | 536; she has participated in a variety of extracurricular |

| 20 | 21 | | activities, including the student council, the Spanish National |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the chemistry |

| 22 | 23 | | club, the Coastal Bend Filipino American Association, and Mission |

| 23 | 24 | | Fit Possible, and she also serves as parliamentarian of the Alpha |

| 24 | 25 | | Beta Honor Society and as historian of the Interact club; in |

| 25 | 26 | | addition, Ms. Rafael is an accomplished pianist who has performed |

| 26 | 27 | | at Carnegie Hall three times, as well as in France, Poland, and |

| 27 | 28 | | Norway, and she regularly competes in local, regional, and national |

| 28 | 29 | | contests; after graduation, she plans to study pre-med at The |

| 29 | 30 | | University of Texas with the ultimate goal of becoming a heart |

| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, This exceptional young Texan has pursued her goals |
