6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A respected member of the Texas legislative |
---|
7 | 7 | | community was lost with the death of Nelson Reyes Salinas, |
---|
8 | 8 | | governmental affairs manager for the Texas Association of Business, |
---|
9 | 9 | | on April 29, 2015, at the age of 37; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Nelson Salinas was born in South Texas on October 1, |
---|
11 | 11 | | 1977, and he grew up in Sharyland and graduated from high school in |
---|
12 | 12 | | 1996; he attended South Texas Community College and The University |
---|
13 | 13 | | of Texas--Pan American, where he earned a bachelor's degree in |
---|
14 | 14 | | political science; he put himself through school by working on oil |
---|
15 | 15 | | rigs and construction sites, and he went on to work for three years |
---|
16 | 16 | | with the migrant program at McAllen Independent School District and |
---|
17 | 17 | | for one year as a substitute teacher at La Joya ISD; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, An abiding interest in politics brought Mr. Salinas |
---|
19 | 19 | | to Austin and to the early voting section of the Travis County Clerk |
---|
20 | 20 | | Elections Division, where he trained poll workers and managed the |
---|
21 | 21 | | day-to-day operations of the office; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Before beginning his employment with TAB, he had a |
---|
23 | 23 | | notable tenure as a legislative aide; he worked for State |
---|
24 | 24 | | Representative Dora Olivo and managed a highly successful |
---|
25 | 25 | | reelection campaign for her; he later served as legislative |
---|
26 | 26 | | director for State Representative Roberto Gutierrez for several |
---|
27 | 27 | | sessions before returning to South Texas to manage the winning |
---|
28 | 28 | | reelection campaign of State District Judge Ed Aparacio; he |
---|
29 | 29 | | returned to the legislature as the chief of staff for State |
---|
30 | 30 | | Representative Yvonne Gonzalez Toureilles; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, he was a strong |
---|
32 | 32 | | advocate for quality education for all students in Texas; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Nelson Salinas was well-known around the State |
---|
34 | 34 | | Capitol as a supportive mentor to younger staffers and as a warm and |
---|
35 | 35 | | kind-hearted friend, always ready with a smile and good advice; |
---|
36 | 36 | | although he was taken much too soon, he leaves behind a legacy that |
---|
37 | 37 | | will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, |
---|
38 | 38 | | therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Nelson Reyes Salinas |
---|
41 | 41 | | and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |
---|
42 | 42 | | mother, Maria G. Salinas; to his siblings, Melibea Salinas, Argelio |
---|
43 | 43 | | Salinas, and Vianney Salinas Paredes; to his nieces and nephews, |
---|
44 | 44 | | Veronica Rae Guzman, Jacob Guzman, Donovan Gamez, Danyela Gamez, |
---|
45 | 45 | | Allana Paredes, Diego Hipolito, and Dominick Gamez; and to his |

46 | 46 | | other relatives and many friends; and, be it further |

47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
