55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, A respected member of the Texas legislative
77 community was lost with the death of Nelson Reyes Salinas,
88 governmental affairs manager for the Texas Association of Business,
99 on April 29, 2015, at the age of 37; and
1010 WHEREAS, Nelson Salinas was born in South Texas on October 1,
1111 1977, and he grew up in Sharyland and graduated from high school in
1212 1996; he attended South Texas Community College and The University
1313 of Texas--Pan American, where he earned a bachelor's degree in
1414 political science; he put himself through school by working on oil
1515 rigs and construction sites, and he went on to work for three years
1616 with the migrant program at McAllen Independent School District and
1717 for one year as a substitute teacher at La Joya ISD; and
1818 WHEREAS, An abiding interest in politics brought Mr. Salinas
1919 to Austin and to the early voting section of the Travis County Clerk
2020 Elections Division, where he trained poll workers and managed the
2121 day-to-day operations of the office; and
2222 WHEREAS, Before beginning his employment with TAB, he had a
2323 notable tenure as a legislative aide; he worked for State
2424 Representative Dora Olivo and managed a highly successful
2525 reelection campaign for her; he later served as legislative
2626 director for State Representative Roberto Gutierrez for several
2727 sessions before returning to South Texas to manage the winning
2828 reelection campaign of State District Judge Ed Aparacio; he
2929 returned to the legislature as the chief of staff for State
3030 Representative Yvonne Gonzalez Toureilles; and
3131 WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, he was a strong
3232 advocate for quality education for all students in Texas; and
3333 WHEREAS, Nelson Salinas was well-known around the State
3434 Capitol as a supportive mentor to younger staffers and as a warm and
3535 kind-hearted friend, always ready with a smile and good advice;
3636 although he was taken much too soon, he leaves behind a legacy that
3737 will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now,
3838 therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4040 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Nelson Reyes Salinas
4141 and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
4242 mother, Maria G. Salinas; to his siblings, Melibea Salinas, Argelio
4343 Salinas, and Vianney Salinas Paredes; to his nieces and nephews,
4444 Veronica Rae Guzman, Jacob Guzman, Donovan Gamez, Danyela Gamez,
4545 Allana Paredes, Diego Hipolito, and Dominick Gamez; and to his
4646 other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4848 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4949 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Nelson
5050 Reyes Salinas.
