44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The picturesque Hill Country community of Llano has
66 long been known across the state and nation as a premier location
77 for deer hunting; and
88 WHEREAS, In the years after its founding in 1855, Llano was
99 the last stop on the railroad and an outpost on the edge of the
1010 largely unsettled land that extended to the west; many settlers
1111 relied on the abundant deer and other game as a source of food,
1212 particularly as they were first establishing their ranches and
1313 farms; and
1414 WHEREAS, Even after the frontier era passed, the countryside
1515 near Llano retained its thriving deer population; hunters from
1616 other parts of the state and beyond began making trips to the area,
1717 and by the early decades of the 1900s, the community was being
1818 nicknamed and thereby regarded by many as the "Deer Capital of
1919 Texas"; and
2020 WHEREAS, Today, the town remains one of the Lone Star State's
2121 most popular destinations for deer hunters; the region of the Hill
2222 Country around Llano boasts one of the highest densities of deer in
2323 the nation, with a ratio of one deer for every two to three acres of
2424 land, greater than any other area in the United States; and
2525 WHEREAS, More than 15,000 people hunt in Llano County each
2626 year, harvesting over 12,000 white-tailed deer annually; the
2727 hunters spend as much as $3.5 million in the county, making the
2828 sport a significant factor in the local economy; and
2929 WHEREAS, On the Friday before the start of each deer season,
3030 the Llano Chamber of Commerce hosts a Hunters Welcome event to
3131 express the city's appreciation for the contributions hunters make
3232 to the town's prosperity, and throughout the season, banners,
3333 posters, and special offers from businesses create a friendly
3434 environment for hunting enthusiasts; and
3535 WHEREAS, From its origins as a frontier town to the present
3636 day, Llano has been a paradise for deer hunters, and the community's
3737 prominent role in this popular sport is indeed deserving of special
3838 recognition; and
3939 WHEREAS, Llano has been historically and widely recognized
4040 throughout the state and nation as the "Deer Capital of Texas" by
4141 official publications and online research sites such as Texas
4242 Highways Magazine, TravelTex.com, Texas State Historical
4343 Association, and the Insurance Council of Texas; now, therefore, be
4444 it
4545 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4646 Legislature hereby honor Llano as the Deer Capital of Texas; and be
4747 it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4949 prepared for the city of Llano as an expression of high regard by
5050 the Texas House of Representatives.
