| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The picturesque Hill Country community of Llano has |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | long been known across the state and nation as a premier location |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | for deer hunting; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In the years after its founding in 1855, Llano was |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the last stop on the railroad and an outpost on the edge of the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | largely unsettled land that extended to the west; many settlers |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | relied on the abundant deer and other game as a source of food, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | particularly as they were first establishing their ranches and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | farms; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Even after the frontier era passed, the countryside |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | near Llano retained its thriving deer population; hunters from |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | other parts of the state and beyond began making trips to the area, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and by the early decades of the 1900s, the community was being |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | nicknamed and thereby regarded by many as the "Deer Capital of |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Texas"; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, the town remains one of the Lone Star State's |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | most popular destinations for deer hunters; the region of the Hill |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Country around Llano boasts one of the highest densities of deer in |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | the nation, with a ratio of one deer for every two to three acres of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | land, greater than any other area in the United States; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, More than 15,000 people hunt in Llano County each |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | year, harvesting over 12,000 white-tailed deer annually; the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | hunters spend as much as $3.5 million in the county, making the |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | sport a significant factor in the local economy; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, On the Friday before the start of each deer season, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the Llano Chamber of Commerce hosts a Hunters Welcome event to |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | express the city's appreciation for the contributions hunters make |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | to the town's prosperity, and throughout the season, banners, |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | posters, and special offers from businesses create a friendly |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | environment for hunting enthusiasts; and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, From its origins as a frontier town to the present |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | day, Llano has been a paradise for deer hunters, and the community's |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | prominent role in this popular sport is indeed deserving of special |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | recognition; and |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Llano has been historically and widely recognized |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | throughout the state and nation as the "Deer Capital of Texas" by |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | official publications and online research sites such as Texas |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Highways Magazine, TravelTex.com, Texas State Historical |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | Association, and the Insurance Council of Texas; now, therefore, be |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | it |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|---|
| 46 | 46 | | Legislature hereby honor Llano as the Deer Capital of Texas; and be |
|---|
| 47 | 47 | | it further |
|---|
| 48 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 49 | 49 | | prepared for the city of Llano as an expression of high regard by |
|---|
| 50 | 50 | | the Texas House of Representatives. |
