5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dwight David Eisenhower, the 34th president of the |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Denison, Texas, in 1890 and raised in |
---|
9 | 10 | | Abilene, Kansas, Dwight Eisenhower devoted his life to the service |
---|
10 | 11 | | of his country; in 1911, he left Abilene to attend the U.S. Military |
---|
11 | 12 | | Academy at West Point, taking the first step on one of the most |
---|
12 | 13 | | distinguished military careers in U.S. history, a career that |
---|
13 | 14 | | culminated in his appointment as the supreme commander of Allied |
---|
14 | 15 | | forces in Europe during World War II and, subsequently, as the first |
---|
15 | 16 | | supreme commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, In 1952, General Eisenhower was elected president of |
---|
17 | 18 | | the United States in a landslide victory; as our nation's |
---|
18 | 19 | | commander-in-chief over the next eight years, he worked to preserve |
---|
19 | 20 | | the hard-won peace during the height of the Cold War; at home, he |
---|
20 | 21 | | oversaw an era of prosperity, signed important civil rights |
---|
21 | 22 | | legislation, and launched the construction of the modern interstate |
---|
22 | 23 | | highway system; he also established the Defense Advanced Research |
---|
23 | 24 | | Projects Agency, which went on to create the Internet, as well as |

24 | 25 | | the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, helping to |

25 | 26 | | initiate one of the greatest periods of technological and |

26 | 27 | | scientific advancement in human history; and |

27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Renowned for his unwavering integrity, skillful |

28 | 29 | | leadership, and lifelong public service, Dwight Eisenhower is to be |

29 | 30 | | honored with a memorial in our nation's capital, situated in a |

30 | 31 | | four-acre park at the base of Capitol Hill; the monument's design by |
---|
31 | 32 | | famed architect Frank Gehry appropriately captures the two main |
---|
32 | 33 | | elements of Eisenhower's life, as general and as president; his |
---|
33 | 34 | | military service will be represented by a bronze statue inspired by |
---|
34 | 35 | | the famous photo of his visit with the 101st Airborne Division just |
---|
35 | 36 | | before D-Day, in front of a bas-relief of the Normandy landing; |
---|
36 | 37 | | another bronze statue depicts him as president, flanked by abstract |
---|
37 | 38 | | figures representing the balance between civilian authority and |
---|
38 | 39 | | military power; and |

39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, The effort to fund and break ground for this |

40 | 41 | | memorial is being overseen by the members of the Dwight D. |

41 | 42 | | Eisenhower Memorial Commission, with Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas |

42 | 43 | | serving as chair and Representative Mike Thompson of California |

43 | 44 | | serving as vice chair; once completed, the monument will join those |

44 | 45 | | honoring Presidents Lincoln, Jefferson, and Washington as a fitting |

45 | 46 | | tribute to one of America's greatest military leaders and most |

46 | 47 | | influential presidents; now, therefore, be it |

47 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
