45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Dwight David Eisenhower, the 34th president of the
67 United States, is to be honored with a national memorial in
78 Washington, D.C.; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in Denison, Texas, in 1890 and raised in
910 Abilene, Kansas, Dwight Eisenhower devoted his life to the service
1011 of his country; in 1911, he left Abilene to attend the U.S. Military
1112 Academy at West Point, taking the first step on one of the most
1213 distinguished military careers in U.S. history, a career that
1314 culminated in his appointment as the supreme commander of Allied
1415 forces in Europe during World War II and, subsequently, as the first
1516 supreme commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization; and
1617 WHEREAS, In 1952, General Eisenhower was elected president of
1718 the United States in a landslide victory; as our nation's
1819 commander-in-chief over the next eight years, he worked to preserve
1920 the hard-won peace during the height of the Cold War; at home, he
2021 oversaw an era of prosperity, signed important civil rights
2122 legislation, and launched the construction of the modern interstate
2223 highway system; he also established the Defense Advanced Research
2324 Projects Agency, which went on to create the Internet, as well as
2425 the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, helping to
2526 initiate one of the greatest periods of technological and
2627 scientific advancement in human history; and
2728 WHEREAS, Renowned for his unwavering integrity, skillful
2829 leadership, and lifelong public service, Dwight Eisenhower is to be
2930 honored with a memorial in our nation's capital, situated in a
3031 four-acre park at the base of Capitol Hill; the monument's design by
3132 famed architect Frank Gehry appropriately captures the two main
3233 elements of Eisenhower's life, as general and as president; his
3334 military service will be represented by a bronze statue inspired by
3435 the famous photo of his visit with the 101st Airborne Division just
3536 before D-Day, in front of a bas-relief of the Normandy landing;
3637 another bronze statue depicts him as president, flanked by abstract
3738 figures representing the balance between civilian authority and
3839 military power; and
3940 WHEREAS, The effort to fund and break ground for this
4041 memorial is being overseen by the members of the Dwight D.
4142 Eisenhower Memorial Commission, with Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas
4243 serving as chair and Representative Mike Thompson of California
4344 serving as vice chair; once completed, the monument will join those
4445 honoring Presidents Lincoln, Jefferson, and Washington as a fitting
4546 tribute to one of America's greatest military leaders and most
4647 influential presidents; now, therefore, be it
4748 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4849 Legislature hereby commemorate the legacy of President Dwight D.
4950 Eisenhower and the effort to build a national memorial to him in
5051 Washington, D.C.; and, be it further
5152 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5253 prepared for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission as an
5354 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
