45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Social workers contribute immeasurably to the
67 well-being of Texas residents, and these dedicated men and women
78 are being honored during March 2015 with the observance of
89 Professional Social Work Month; and
910 WHEREAS, For more than a century, social workers have helped
1011 individuals overcome life's most difficult challenges by providing
1112 them with the knowledge, skills, and assistance necessary to build
1213 a brighter future; and
1314 WHEREAS, Deeply committed to the ideals of shared prosperity
1415 and equal opportunity for all, early social workers in the United
1516 States fought for progressive reform and played an essential role
1617 in the establishment of Social Security, Medicare, and other core
1718 programs that protect all U.S. citizens; and
1819 WHEREAS, Through their determined advocacy, social workers
1920 have also helped bring about greater protections for children and
2021 improved treatment for people suffering from physical disabilities
2122 and mental illness; moreover, members of the profession reach out
2223 to the elderly, veterans, and other underserved groups, and they
2324 are frequently called on to assist those suffering from poverty,
2425 discrimination, and abuse; and
2526 WHEREAS, According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics,
2627 social work is one of the fastest-growing careers in the nation,
2728 with more than 650,000 Americans holding degrees in the field;
2829 these skilled professionals undergo extensive training and are
2930 employed in schools, hospitals, prisons, government and private
3031 agencies, and numerous other settings; and
3132 WHEREAS, A nation's character is defined by its treatment of
3233 its most vulnerable citizens, and social workers in the Lone Star
3334 State and beyond are indeed deserving of respect and appreciation
3435 for their tireless efforts to improve the lives of individuals and
3536 families in need; now, therefore, be it
3637 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3738 Legislature hereby recognize March 2015 as Professional Social Work
3839 Month and commend the members of this vital profession for their
3940 hard work and many accomplishments; and, be it further
4041 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4142 prepared for the Texas chapter of the National Association of
4243 Social Workers as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
4344 Representatives.
