| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Social workers contribute immeasurably to the |

| 6 | 7 | | well-being of Texas residents, and these dedicated men and women |

| 7 | 8 | | are being honored during March 2015 with the observance of |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | Professional Social Work Month; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, For more than a century, social workers have helped |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | individuals overcome life's most difficult challenges by providing |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | them with the knowledge, skills, and assistance necessary to build |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | a brighter future; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Deeply committed to the ideals of shared prosperity |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | and equal opportunity for all, early social workers in the United |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | States fought for progressive reform and played an essential role |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | in the establishment of Social Security, Medicare, and other core |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | programs that protect all U.S. citizens; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Through their determined advocacy, social workers |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | have also helped bring about greater protections for children and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | improved treatment for people suffering from physical disabilities |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | and mental illness; moreover, members of the profession reach out |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | to the elderly, veterans, and other underserved groups, and they |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | are frequently called on to assist those suffering from poverty, |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | discrimination, and abuse; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | social work is one of the fastest-growing careers in the nation, |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | with more than 650,000 Americans holding degrees in the field; |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | these skilled professionals undergo extensive training and are |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | employed in schools, hospitals, prisons, government and private |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | agencies, and numerous other settings; and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, A nation's character is defined by its treatment of |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | its most vulnerable citizens, and social workers in the Lone Star |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | State and beyond are indeed deserving of respect and appreciation |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | for their tireless efforts to improve the lives of individuals and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | families in need; now, therefore, be it |

| 36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 2015 as Professional Social Work |

| 38 | 39 | | Month and commend the members of this vital profession for their |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | hard work and many accomplishments; and, be it further |

| 40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

| 41 | 42 | | prepared for the Texas chapter of the National Association of |
|---|
| 42 | 43 | | Social Workers as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of |
