45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Rapoport Academy Public School in Waco is hosting a
67 ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 21, 2015, to celebrate the
78 restoration of the historic Bishop Joseph Gomez Building; and
89 WHEREAS, Named for a prominent bishop in the African
910 Methodist Episcopal Church, this building formerly served as the
1011 administration building for Paul Quinn College, the oldest African
1112 American liberal arts college in Texas; after the school relocated
1213 to Dallas in 1990, the building was left empty, and it fell into
1314 disrepair; and
1415 WHEREAS, The renovation effort, which began in 2014, is the
1516 fifth such project undertaken on Quinn Campus by Rapoport Academy,
1617 a college preparatory charter school that serves nearly 800
1718 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade; special care was
1819 taken to retain the original appearance of the Gomez Building,
1920 which will serve as the primary academic building for Meyer Public
2021 High School; and
2122 WHEREAS, The renovation of the Gomez Building has preserved
2223 an important part of Texas history while enabling the Rapoport
2324 Academy to provide even more area students with a first-rate
2425 education; now, therefore, be it
2526 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
2627 Legislature hereby commemorate the renovation of the Bishop Joseph
2728 Gomez Building and commend Rapoport Academy Public School for its
2829 ongoing efforts to repurpose such landmarks for the benefit of the
2930 community; and, be it further
3031 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3132 prepared for Rapoport Academy as an expression of high regard by the
3233 Texas House of Representatives.
