5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Rapoport Academy Public School in Waco is hosting a |

6 | 7 | | ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 21, 2015, to celebrate the |

7 | 8 | | restoration of the historic Bishop Joseph Gomez Building; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Named for a prominent bishop in the African |
---|
9 | 10 | | Methodist Episcopal Church, this building formerly served as the |
---|
10 | 11 | | administration building for Paul Quinn College, the oldest African |
---|
11 | 12 | | American liberal arts college in Texas; after the school relocated |
---|
12 | 13 | | to Dallas in 1990, the building was left empty, and it fell into |
---|
13 | 14 | | disrepair; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The renovation effort, which began in 2014, is the |
---|
15 | 16 | | fifth such project undertaken on Quinn Campus by Rapoport Academy, |
---|
16 | 17 | | a college preparatory charter school that serves nearly 800 |
---|
17 | 18 | | students from prekindergarten through 12th grade; special care was |
---|
18 | 19 | | taken to retain the original appearance of the Gomez Building, |
---|
19 | 20 | | which will serve as the primary academic building for Meyer Public |
---|
20 | 21 | | High School; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The renovation of the Gomez Building has preserved |

22 | 23 | | an important part of Texas history while enabling the Rapoport |
---|
23 | 24 | | Academy to provide even more area students with a first-rate |
---|
24 | 25 | | education; now, therefore, be it |

25 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

26 | 27 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the renovation of the Bishop Joseph |

27 | 28 | | Gomez Building and commend Rapoport Academy Public School for its |
---|
28 | 29 | | ongoing efforts to repurpose such landmarks for the benefit of the |

29 | 30 | | community; and, be it further |

30 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

31 | 32 | | prepared for Rapoport Academy as an expression of high regard by the |

32 | 33 | | Texas House of Representatives. |
