5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Stephen Beasley is retiring as publisher of the |

6 | 7 | | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal in 2015, drawing to a close a notable |

7 | 8 | | career in the newspaper business that has spanned more than four |
---|
8 | 9 | | decades; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Born in Clovis, New Mexico, Mr. Beasley was raised |
---|
10 | 11 | | in Lubbock, where he worked as a paper carrier for the |
---|
11 | 12 | | Avalanche-Journal during his youth; he went on to attend Texas Tech |
---|
12 | 13 | | University, and a month after his graduation in May 1972, he went to |
---|
13 | 14 | | work at the newspaper in the retail advertising department, working |
---|
14 | 15 | | his way up to advertising director in 1983; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1990, Mr. Beasley left Lubbock to broaden his |
---|
16 | 17 | | experience by serving in advertising leadership positions at papers |
---|
17 | 18 | | in Leesburg, Florida, and Amarillo; he moved to Georgia in 2002 to |
---|
18 | 19 | | become the general manager of the Savannah Morning News, and in 2004 |
---|
19 | 20 | | he returned to his hometown, and to his hometown newspaper, when he |
---|
20 | 21 | | was named the publisher of the Avalanche-Journal; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, Mr. Beasley has been recognized |
---|
22 | 23 | | as an influential leader in the newspaper industry; he served as |
---|
23 | 24 | | president of the Texas Newspaper Advertising Managers Association |
---|
24 | 25 | | and the Midwest Newspaper Advertising Executives Association and as |
---|
25 | 26 | | Texas vice president of the International Advertising Executives |
---|
26 | 27 | | Association; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, This caring gentleman has also found time to give |
---|
28 | 29 | | back to his community; a member of the board of the Lubbock Chamber |
---|
29 | 30 | | of Commerce and the Lubbock Area United Way, he has also served as |
---|
30 | 31 | | president of the Panhandle-South Plains Fair board, as chair of the |
---|
31 | 32 | | Texas Tech College of Media and Communications advisory board, and |
---|
32 | 33 | | as a member of the Hope Lodge Capital Campaign Steering Committee; |
---|
33 | 34 | | in all his endeavors, he enjoys the love and support of his wife, |

34 | 35 | | Phyllis; and |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Stephen Beasley's dedication, professionalism, and |
---|
36 | 37 | | commitment to excellence have greatly benefited the people of |

37 | 38 | | Lubbock and earned him the respect and admiration of his peers, and |

38 | 39 | | he may indeed reflect with pride on his many achievements as he |
---|
39 | 40 | | embarks upon the next exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore, |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Stephen Beasley on his retirement |

43 | 44 | | from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and extend to him sincere best |
