45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Stephen Beasley is retiring as publisher of the
67 Lubbock Avalanche-Journal in 2015, drawing to a close a notable
78 career in the newspaper business that has spanned more than four
89 decades; and
910 WHEREAS, Born in Clovis, New Mexico, Mr. Beasley was raised
1011 in Lubbock, where he worked as a paper carrier for the
1112 Avalanche-Journal during his youth; he went on to attend Texas Tech
1213 University, and a month after his graduation in May 1972, he went to
1314 work at the newspaper in the retail advertising department, working
1415 his way up to advertising director in 1983; and
1516 WHEREAS, In 1990, Mr. Beasley left Lubbock to broaden his
1617 experience by serving in advertising leadership positions at papers
1718 in Leesburg, Florida, and Amarillo; he moved to Georgia in 2002 to
1819 become the general manager of the Savannah Morning News, and in 2004
1920 he returned to his hometown, and to his hometown newspaper, when he
2021 was named the publisher of the Avalanche-Journal; and
2122 WHEREAS, Through the years, Mr. Beasley has been recognized
2223 as an influential leader in the newspaper industry; he served as
2324 president of the Texas Newspaper Advertising Managers Association
2425 and the Midwest Newspaper Advertising Executives Association and as
2526 Texas vice president of the International Advertising Executives
2627 Association; and
2728 WHEREAS, This caring gentleman has also found time to give
2829 back to his community; a member of the board of the Lubbock Chamber
2930 of Commerce and the Lubbock Area United Way, he has also served as
3031 president of the Panhandle-South Plains Fair board, as chair of the
3132 Texas Tech College of Media and Communications advisory board, and
3233 as a member of the Hope Lodge Capital Campaign Steering Committee;
3334 in all his endeavors, he enjoys the love and support of his wife,
3435 Phyllis; and
3536 WHEREAS, Stephen Beasley's dedication, professionalism, and
3637 commitment to excellence have greatly benefited the people of
3738 Lubbock and earned him the respect and admiration of his peers, and
3839 he may indeed reflect with pride on his many achievements as he
3940 embarks upon the next exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore,
4041 be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby congratulate Stephen Beasley on his retirement
4344 from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and extend to him sincere best
4445 wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for Mr. Beasley as an expression of high regard by the
4748 Texas House of Representatives.
