| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the |

| 6 | 7 | | passing of Dr. John Wallace Griffin of Port Lavaca on March 29, |

| 7 | 8 | | 2015, at the age of 85; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, John Griffin was born on his family's farm near |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Weslaco, the youngest of Charles and Cora Griffin's six children; |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | after graduating from Weslaco High School, he joined the United |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | States Marine Corps, and he later served for 10 years in the U.S. |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Air Force Reserve; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Following his honorable discharge from the marines, |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Dr. Griffin returned home to the Rio Grande Valley to run his |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | family's dairy operation, and he began his college studies at |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Edinburg Junior College; he went on to major in chemistry and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | English at Baylor University, and during his years in Waco, he met |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Marian Ellen McCutcheon, whom he married in 1951; after graduating |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | from the Baylor College of Medicine in 1954, he completed his |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | internship at Hermann Hospital in Houston; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Griffin established a rewarding 40-year career |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | as a family physician and surgeon in Port Lavaca, where his |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | expertise was greatly admired; a prominent member of his |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | profession, he played an integral part in the creation of the local |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | indigent care program and served as president of the Victoria, |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Calhoun, and Goliad County Medical Society; his involvement in |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | community affairs included service on the Calhoun County |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | Independent School District board of trustees and the City of Port |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | Lavaca parks board, and he was a dedicated supporter of the YMCA, |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | the Victoria Bach Festival Association, and other civic |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | organizations; in addition, he was a valued congregant of First |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | United Methodist Church of Port Lavaca; and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, In his leisure time, Dr. Griffin pursued such |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | outdoor activities as fishing, golf, scuba diving, and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | bird-watching, and he was an avid card and domino player; he also |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | relished the time he spent with his family, which included his four |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | children, John, Jeannine, Jill, and David, as well as his numerous |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, A skilled doctor, a devoted husband and father, and |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | an influential community leader, Dr. John Griffin excelled in all |
|---|
| 41 | 42 | | of these roles, and numerous lives were enriched by his kindness and |
|---|
| 42 | 43 | | compassion; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 44 | 45 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. John Wallace |

| 45 | 46 | | Griffin and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to |
