45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the
67 passing of Dr. John Wallace Griffin of Port Lavaca on March 29,
78 2015, at the age of 85; and
89 WHEREAS, John Griffin was born on his family's farm near
910 Weslaco, the youngest of Charles and Cora Griffin's six children;
1011 after graduating from Weslaco High School, he joined the United
1112 States Marine Corps, and he later served for 10 years in the U.S.
1213 Air Force Reserve; and
1314 WHEREAS, Following his honorable discharge from the marines,
1415 Dr. Griffin returned home to the Rio Grande Valley to run his
1516 family's dairy operation, and he began his college studies at
1617 Edinburg Junior College; he went on to major in chemistry and
1718 English at Baylor University, and during his years in Waco, he met
1819 Marian Ellen McCutcheon, whom he married in 1951; after graduating
1920 from the Baylor College of Medicine in 1954, he completed his
2021 internship at Hermann Hospital in Houston; and
2122 WHEREAS, Dr. Griffin established a rewarding 40-year career
2223 as a family physician and surgeon in Port Lavaca, where his
2324 expertise was greatly admired; a prominent member of his
2425 profession, he played an integral part in the creation of the local
2526 indigent care program and served as president of the Victoria,
2627 Calhoun, and Goliad County Medical Society; his involvement in
2728 community affairs included service on the Calhoun County
2829 Independent School District board of trustees and the City of Port
2930 Lavaca parks board, and he was a dedicated supporter of the YMCA,
3031 the Victoria Bach Festival Association, and other civic
3132 organizations; in addition, he was a valued congregant of First
3233 United Methodist Church of Port Lavaca; and
3334 WHEREAS, In his leisure time, Dr. Griffin pursued such
3435 outdoor activities as fishing, golf, scuba diving, and
3536 bird-watching, and he was an avid card and domino player; he also
3637 relished the time he spent with his family, which included his four
3738 children, John, Jeannine, Jill, and David, as well as his numerous
3839 grandchildren; and
3940 WHEREAS, A skilled doctor, a devoted husband and father, and
4041 an influential community leader, Dr. John Griffin excelled in all
4142 of these roles, and numerous lives were enriched by his kindness and
4243 compassion; now, therefore, be it
4344 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4445 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. John Wallace
4546 Griffin and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to
4647 his wife, Marian McCutcheon Griffin; to his children, John Griffin
4748 Jr. and his wife, Lynn Knaupp, Jeannine Griffin and her husband,
4849 Paul Bunnell, Jill Griffin Stover and her husband, Lanse, and David
4950 Griffin and his wife, Lisa; to his grandchildren, Griffin, Charles,
5051 Randy, and Riley Bunnell, Greg, Cora, Ruth, Sarah, and Molly Jo
5152 Griffin, and Anna and Clare Stover; to his step-grandson, Austin
5253 Watts; to Abbas Shahdadi and his wife, Nazanin Shahdadi; to Lesley
5354 Clark and his wife, Colleen Smith; and to his other relatives and
5455 friends; and, be it further
5556 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5657 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5758 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. John
5859 Wallace Griffin.
