5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Glenna Burns of Lubbock has rendered exceptional |

6 | 7 | | service to her community as an educator and as a community |

7 | 8 | | volunteer; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, An alumna of Texas Tech University, Mrs. Burns had |
---|
9 | 10 | | completed 40 hours of coursework at Tech when she began teaching at |
---|
10 | 11 | | Community Center Schools in 1946, at the age of 17; she married the |
---|
11 | 12 | | following year and became a homemaker and the mother of two sons, |
---|
12 | 13 | | Ted and James; in 1961, she returned to Texas Tech to complete her |
---|
13 | 14 | | degree, and following her graduation in 1963, she embarked on an |
---|
14 | 15 | | outstanding 27-year career in the Lubbock Independent School |
---|
15 | 16 | | District; she served on numerous committees, created and organized |
---|
16 | 17 | | workshops, raised scholarship funds, and worked to increase |
---|
17 | 18 | | participation in the state's textbook selection process; in |
---|
18 | 19 | | addition, she was instrumental in the establishment of a sick leave |
---|
19 | 20 | | bank for LISD personnel, and she was elected to its inaugural board |
---|
20 | 21 | | of directors; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Burns remained deeply engaged in education and |
---|
22 | 23 | | youth enrichment following her retirement; she volunteered in |
---|
23 | 24 | | schools, and she served the Texas Retired Teachers Association in |
---|
24 | 25 | | many capacities, among them as board member, state health care |
---|
25 | 26 | | chair, state convention chair, and district and local president; a |
---|
26 | 27 | | powerful advocate for retired educators, she has written more than |
---|
27 | 28 | | 200 letters to newspaper editorial boards across the state about |
---|
28 | 29 | | important issues; her numerous accolades include the prestigious |
---|
29 | 30 | | 2013 E. L. Galyean Service Award from the TRTA; moreover, she led |
---|
30 | 31 | | the Adopt-a-School Program of Altrusa International of Lubbock, and |
---|
31 | 32 | | she has given generously of her time and talents to the League of |
---|
32 | 33 | | Women Voters, the Family Guidance and Outreach Center's Connection |
---|
33 | 34 | | Kids, the Twentieth Century Club, and many other groups; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, There is no greater challenge or responsibility than |
---|
35 | 36 | | the education of our children, and through her steadfast dedication |
---|
36 | 37 | | to that mission, Glenna Burns has made vital contributions to her |
---|
37 | 38 | | community and her state; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby honor Glenna Burns for her endeavors in behalf |
---|
40 | 41 | | of public education and extend to her sincere best wishes for the |

41 | 42 | | future; and, be it further |
