45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Glenna Burns of Lubbock has rendered exceptional
67 service to her community as an educator and as a community
78 volunteer; and
89 WHEREAS, An alumna of Texas Tech University, Mrs. Burns had
910 completed 40 hours of coursework at Tech when she began teaching at
1011 Community Center Schools in 1946, at the age of 17; she married the
1112 following year and became a homemaker and the mother of two sons,
1213 Ted and James; in 1961, she returned to Texas Tech to complete her
1314 degree, and following her graduation in 1963, she embarked on an
1415 outstanding 27-year career in the Lubbock Independent School
1516 District; she served on numerous committees, created and organized
1617 workshops, raised scholarship funds, and worked to increase
1718 participation in the state's textbook selection process; in
1819 addition, she was instrumental in the establishment of a sick leave
1920 bank for LISD personnel, and she was elected to its inaugural board
2021 of directors; and
2122 WHEREAS, Mrs. Burns remained deeply engaged in education and
2223 youth enrichment following her retirement; she volunteered in
2324 schools, and she served the Texas Retired Teachers Association in
2425 many capacities, among them as board member, state health care
2526 chair, state convention chair, and district and local president; a
2627 powerful advocate for retired educators, she has written more than
2728 200 letters to newspaper editorial boards across the state about
2829 important issues; her numerous accolades include the prestigious
2930 2013 E. L. Galyean Service Award from the TRTA; moreover, she led
3031 the Adopt-a-School Program of Altrusa International of Lubbock, and
3132 she has given generously of her time and talents to the League of
3233 Women Voters, the Family Guidance and Outreach Center's Connection
3334 Kids, the Twentieth Century Club, and many other groups; and
3435 WHEREAS, There is no greater challenge or responsibility than
3536 the education of our children, and through her steadfast dedication
3637 to that mission, Glenna Burns has made vital contributions to her
3738 community and her state; now, therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3940 Legislature hereby honor Glenna Burns for her endeavors in behalf
4041 of public education and extend to her sincere best wishes for the
4142 future; and, be it further
4243 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4344 prepared for Mrs. Burns as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4445 House of Representatives.
