5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud community members are gathering in Austin on |

6 | 7 | | February 10, 2015, to celebrate South Texas Independent School |

7 | 8 | | District Day at the State Capitol; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Originally known as the Rio Grande Rehabilitation |
---|
9 | 10 | | District, the South Texas Independent School District was |
---|
10 | 11 | | established in 1964 to create further educational opportunities for |
---|
11 | 12 | | area youths with disabilities; in 1973, legislators broadened the |
---|
12 | 13 | | district's purpose to allow it to operate vocational magnet |
---|
13 | 14 | | schools, and as a result, STISD opened South Texas High School for |
---|
14 | 15 | | Health Professions in 1984 and the Science Academy of South Texas |
---|
15 | 16 | | five years later; the district established the Teacher Academy of |
---|
16 | 17 | | South Texas in 1993, subsequently renaming the school South Texas |
---|
17 | 18 | | Business, Education and Technology Academy to better reflect its |
---|
18 | 19 | | focus; over the following years, the magnet program continued to |
---|
19 | 20 | | expand with the addition of South Texas Academy for Medical |
---|
20 | 21 | | Professions and South Texas Preparatory Academy; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Currently encompassing five magnet schools in |
---|
22 | 23 | | Edinburg, San Benito, and Mercedes, STISD is the only all-magnet |
---|
23 | 24 | | district in the state; it serves more than 3,300 junior high and |
---|
24 | 25 | | high school students and maintains an open enrollment policy that |
---|
25 | 26 | | attracts interested and hardworking pupils from 28 school districts |
---|
26 | 27 | | in Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy Counties, and it continues to |
---|
27 | 28 | | provide educational and occupational training for students with |
---|
28 | 29 | | special needs through its career and technology program; and |
---|
29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, The district's superintendent, Dr. Marla M. Guerra, |
---|
30 | 31 | | ably guides a staff of accomplished teachers, administrators, and |
---|
31 | 32 | | support personnel who are deeply committed to the success of young |
---|
32 | 33 | | people in the tri-county area; in 2014, their work was recognized |
---|
33 | 34 | | when the Texas Education Agency gave every campus in the district |
---|
34 | 35 | | the highest accountability rating and maximum number of distinction |
---|
35 | 36 | | designations available; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, The faculty and staff of South Texas ISD continue to |
---|
37 | 38 | | look for new ways to help students achieve, lead, and contribute to |
---|
38 | 39 | | a changing world; to that end, the district's second middle school, |
---|
39 | 40 | | South Texas Academy of Rising Scholars, will open in the fall of |
---|
40 | 41 | | 2015; and |
---|
41 | 42 | | WHEREAS, For more than half a century, the South Texas |
---|
42 | 43 | | Independent School District has dedicated itself to offering |
---|
43 | 44 | | students the best educational opportunities possible, and in so |
---|
44 | 45 | | doing, it has equipped several generations of Texans with the |
---|
45 | 46 | | knowledge and skills necessary to build a brighter future; now, |
---|
46 | 47 | | therefore, be it |

47 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
48 | 49 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 10, 2015, as South Texas |
---|
49 | 50 | | Independent School District Day at the State Capitol and extend to |
---|
50 | 51 | | all those in attendance sincere best wishes for an enjoyable visit |
---|
51 | 52 | | to Austin; and, be it further |

52 | 53 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
