45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The city of El Paso lost an admired business and
67 civic leader with the passing of Richard Poe on May 16, 2015, at the
78 age of 81; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in El Paso on April 7, 1934, Dick Poe earned his
910 bachelor's degree in business administration at The University of
1011 Texas--El Paso and subsequently joined his family's automotive
1112 business; he expanded its dealerships to include Dick Poe
1213 Chrysler-Jeep, Dick Poe Dodge-Ram, and Dick Poe Toyota-Scion, and
1314 today, the company employs more than 400 people; over the years,
1415 Mr. Poe was a mentor to many of his staff members, even after they
1516 went on to other careers, and he looked out for the interests of
1617 other dealers; and
1718 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan also owned Evergreen Cemeteries
1819 and several other properties, and he served on the boards of State
1920 National Bank, Coronado Bank, Sandia Savings and Loan, and other
2021 businesses; he remained involved in day-to-day operations of his
2122 dealerships until shortly before his death; a quiet philanthropist,
2223 he generously supported his alma mater and its athletics
2324 department, and he contributed to Special Olympics, United Cerebral
2425 Palsy, and countless other charities while shying away from
2526 recognition; he was a member of numerous civic organizations, among
2627 them the Masonic Lodge, El Maida Shrine, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon;
2728 and
2829 WHEREAS, A man of great warmth and kindness, Dick Poe will be
2930 deeply missed by those who were privileged to share in the richness
3031 of his life, but his contributions to the community will continue to
3132 resonate in the years to come; now, therefore, be it
3233 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3334 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dick Poe and extend
3435 sincere condolences to his family: to his sons, Richard C. Poe II
3536 and Troy Stephen Poe; to his sister, Claudia Barry; to his nieces
3637 and nephews, Alton B. Poe IV, Richard Hopper, Faith Poe, Charity
3738 Poe-Rakes, and Kellie Monticelli; and to his other relatives and
3839 friends; and, be it further
3940 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4041 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4142 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dick Poe.
