45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Jane Sibley of Austin has made innumerable
67 contributions to art and history in the Lone Star State, and it is a
78 pleasure to honor this elegant and distinguished civic leader for
89 her many accomplishments; and
910 WHEREAS, Descended from tough West Texas stock, the former
1011 Jane Dunn grew up in Fort Stockton; while performing water ballet
1112 for the Fort Stockton Water Carnival, she discovered a passion for
1213 the arts, which she went on to pursue as a student at The University
1314 of Texas at Austin; and
1415 WHEREAS, In 1950, she married Dr. D. J. Sibley, a World War II
1516 veteran who shared her interests; the couple enjoyed a rewarding
1617 marriage that spanned 54 years, and together they raised three
1718 beloved children; and
1819 WHEREAS, After moving to Austin in the early 1960s,
1920 Ms. Sibley devoted herself to supporting art and history programs;
2021 for her first major project, she put on a highly successful
2122 fund-raiser for the Laguna Gloria Art Museum, later becoming
2223 president of the museum's board of directors; her subsequent
2324 campaign to save prehistoric rock paintings in West Texas led the
2425 governor to appoint her to serve as a member of the Texas Historical
2526 Commission, in which capacity she used her exceptional talent for
2627 obtaining donations to promote many worthy projects; and
2728 WHEREAS, With a reputation for getting things done,
2829 Ms. Sibley was named to the board of the Austin Symphony Orchestra
2930 in 1967 and quickly took a leading role in that organization; for
3031 the next four decades, she guided the symphony as president and then
3132 chair of the board; when the orchestra needed a new performing
3233 center, she helped raise the tens of millions of dollars necessary
3334 to convert the Palmer Auditorium into the Long Center for the
3435 Performing Arts; and
3536 WHEREAS, Among the numerous other institutions to have
3637 benefited from Ms. Sibley's efforts are the Fort Stockton
3738 Historical Society, the Paramount Theatre for the Performing Arts,
3839 and The University of Texas College of Fine Arts Advisory Council;
3940 her philanthropic work has been recognized with the White Shaman
4041 Award from the Rock Art Foundation, the Ima Hogg Award from UT, and
4142 the naming of the Austin Symphony Orchestra Jane Dunn Sibley Award
4243 for Outstanding Cultural Arts Leadership in her honor; she is an
4344 Austin Arts Hall of Fame inductee and an honorary citizen of Mexico;
4445 in 2013, she released an autobiography titled Jane's Window: My
4546 Spirited Life in West Texas and Austin; and
4647 WHEREAS, The intelligence, charm, and steely determination
4748 that Jane Sibley brings to all of her endeavors have created a
4849 record of achievement that will continue to benefit the state for
4950 many years to come; now, therefore, be it
5051 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
5152 Legislature hereby honor Jane Sibley for her civic engagement and
5253 leadership and commend her for her dedication to the arts and to the
5354 preservation of the state's history; and, be it further
5455 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5556 prepared for Ms. Sibley as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5657 House of Representatives.
