5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Jane Sibley of Austin has made innumerable |

6 | 7 | | contributions to art and history in the Lone Star State, and it is a |

7 | 8 | | pleasure to honor this elegant and distinguished civic leader for |

8 | 9 | | her many accomplishments; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Descended from tough West Texas stock, the former |
---|
10 | 11 | | Jane Dunn grew up in Fort Stockton; while performing water ballet |
---|
11 | 12 | | for the Fort Stockton Water Carnival, she discovered a passion for |
---|
12 | 13 | | the arts, which she went on to pursue as a student at The University |
---|
13 | 14 | | of Texas at Austin; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In 1950, she married Dr. D. J. Sibley, a World War II |
---|
15 | 16 | | veteran who shared her interests; the couple enjoyed a rewarding |
---|
16 | 17 | | marriage that spanned 54 years, and together they raised three |
---|
17 | 18 | | beloved children; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, After moving to Austin in the early 1960s, |
---|
19 | 20 | | Ms. Sibley devoted herself to supporting art and history programs; |
---|
20 | 21 | | for her first major project, she put on a highly successful |
---|
21 | 22 | | fund-raiser for the Laguna Gloria Art Museum, later becoming |
---|
22 | 23 | | president of the museum's board of directors; her subsequent |
---|
23 | 24 | | campaign to save prehistoric rock paintings in West Texas led the |
---|
24 | 25 | | governor to appoint her to serve as a member of the Texas Historical |
---|
25 | 26 | | Commission, in which capacity she used her exceptional talent for |
---|
26 | 27 | | obtaining donations to promote many worthy projects; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, With a reputation for getting things done, |
---|
28 | 29 | | Ms. Sibley was named to the board of the Austin Symphony Orchestra |
---|
29 | 30 | | in 1967 and quickly took a leading role in that organization; for |
---|
30 | 31 | | the next four decades, she guided the symphony as president and then |
---|
31 | 32 | | chair of the board; when the orchestra needed a new performing |
---|
32 | 33 | | center, she helped raise the tens of millions of dollars necessary |
---|
33 | 34 | | to convert the Palmer Auditorium into the Long Center for the |
---|
34 | 35 | | Performing Arts; and |
---|
35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Among the numerous other institutions to have |
---|
36 | 37 | | benefited from Ms. Sibley's efforts are the Fort Stockton |
---|
37 | 38 | | Historical Society, the Paramount Theatre for the Performing Arts, |
---|
38 | 39 | | and The University of Texas College of Fine Arts Advisory Council; |

39 | 40 | | her philanthropic work has been recognized with the White Shaman |
---|
40 | 41 | | Award from the Rock Art Foundation, the Ima Hogg Award from UT, and |

41 | 42 | | the naming of the Austin Symphony Orchestra Jane Dunn Sibley Award |

42 | 43 | | for Outstanding Cultural Arts Leadership in her honor; she is an |
---|
43 | 44 | | Austin Arts Hall of Fame inductee and an honorary citizen of Mexico; |

44 | 45 | | in 2013, she released an autobiography titled Jane's Window: My |

45 | 46 | | Spirited Life in West Texas and Austin; and |

46 | 47 | | WHEREAS, The intelligence, charm, and steely determination |

47 | 48 | | that Jane Sibley brings to all of her endeavors have created a |

48 | 49 | | record of achievement that will continue to benefit the state for |

49 | 50 | | many years to come; now, therefore, be it |

50 | 51 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

51 | 52 | | Legislature hereby honor Jane Sibley for her civic engagement and |
---|
52 | 53 | | leadership and commend her for her dedication to the arts and to the |
---|
53 | 54 | | preservation of the state's history; and, be it further |
---|
54 | 55 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
55 | 56 | | prepared for Ms. Sibley as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
---|
56 | 57 | | House of Representatives. |
