| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A respected member of the Texas legislative |

| 6 | 7 | | community was lost with the death of Nelson Reyes Salinas, |

| 7 | 8 | | governmental affairs manager for the Texas Association of Business, |

| 8 | 9 | | on April 29, 2015, at the age of 37; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Nelson Salinas was born in South Texas on October 1, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | 1977, and he grew up in Sharyland and graduated from Sharyland High |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | School in 1996; he attended South Texas Community College and The |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | University of Texas--Pan American, where he earned a bachelor's |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | degree in political science; he put himself through school by |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | working on oil rigs and construction sites, and he went on to work |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | for three years with the migrant program at McAllen Independent |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | School District and for one year as a substitute teacher at La Joya |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | ISD; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, An abiding interest in politics brought Mr. Salinas |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | to Austin and to the early voting section of the Travis County Clerk |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Elections Division, where he trained poll workers and managed the |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | day-to-day operations of the office; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Before beginning his employment with TAB, he had a |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | notable tenure as a legislative aide; he worked for State |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Representative Dora Olivo and managed a highly successful |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | reelection campaign for her; he later served as legislative |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | director for State Representative Roberto Gutierrez for several |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | sessions before returning to South Texas to manage the winning |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | reelection campaign of State District Judge Ed Aparacio; he |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | returned to the legislature as the chief of staff for State |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | Representative Yvonne Gonzalez Toureilles; and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, he was a strong |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | advocate for quality education for all students in Texas; and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Nelson Salinas was well-known around the State |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | Capitol as a supportive mentor to younger staffers and as a warm and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | kind-hearted friend, always ready with a smile and good advice; |

| 36 | 37 | | although he was taken much too soon, he leaves behind a legacy that |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | therefore, be it |

| 39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Nelson Reyes Salinas |

| 41 | 42 | | and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |

| 42 | 43 | | mother, Maria G. Salinas; to his siblings, Melibea Salinas, Argelio |

| 43 | 44 | | Salinas, and Vianney Salinas Paredes; to his nieces and nephews, |

| 44 | 45 | | Veronica Rae Guzman, Jacob Guzman, Donovan Gamez, Danyela Gamez, |
