45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A respected member of the Texas legislative
67 community was lost with the death of Nelson Reyes Salinas,
78 governmental affairs manager for the Texas Association of Business,
89 on April 29, 2015, at the age of 37; and
910 WHEREAS, Nelson Salinas was born in South Texas on October 1,
1011 1977, and he grew up in Sharyland and graduated from Sharyland High
1112 School in 1996; he attended South Texas Community College and The
1213 University of Texas--Pan American, where he earned a bachelor's
1314 degree in political science; he put himself through school by
1415 working on oil rigs and construction sites, and he went on to work
1516 for three years with the migrant program at McAllen Independent
1617 School District and for one year as a substitute teacher at La Joya
1718 ISD; and
1819 WHEREAS, An abiding interest in politics brought Mr. Salinas
1920 to Austin and to the early voting section of the Travis County Clerk
2021 Elections Division, where he trained poll workers and managed the
2122 day-to-day operations of the office; and
2223 WHEREAS, Before beginning his employment with TAB, he had a
2324 notable tenure as a legislative aide; he worked for State
2425 Representative Dora Olivo and managed a highly successful
2526 reelection campaign for her; he later served as legislative
2627 director for State Representative Roberto Gutierrez for several
2728 sessions before returning to South Texas to manage the winning
2829 reelection campaign of State District Judge Ed Aparacio; he
2930 returned to the legislature as the chief of staff for State
3031 Representative Yvonne Gonzalez Toureilles; and
3132 WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, he was a strong
3233 advocate for quality education for all students in Texas; and
3334 WHEREAS, Nelson Salinas was well-known around the State
3435 Capitol as a supportive mentor to younger staffers and as a warm and
3536 kind-hearted friend, always ready with a smile and good advice;
3637 although he was taken much too soon, he leaves behind a legacy that
3738 will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now,
3839 therefore, be it
3940 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4041 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Nelson Reyes Salinas
4142 and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
4243 mother, Maria G. Salinas; to his siblings, Melibea Salinas, Argelio
4344 Salinas, and Vianney Salinas Paredes; to his nieces and nephews,
4445 Veronica Rae Guzman, Jacob Guzman, Donovan Gamez, Danyela Gamez,
4546 Allana Paredes, Diego Hipolito, and Dominick Gamez; and to his
4647 other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
4748 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4849 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4950 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Nelson
5051 Reyes Salinas.
