8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Beginning in the late 19th century, proud citizens |

9 | 10 | | contemplated setting aside a special time to reflect on the |

10 | 11 | | significance of their beloved flag; in 1885, a Wisconsin public |
---|
11 | 12 | | school teacher arranged for his students to commemorate "Flag |
---|
12 | 13 | | Birthday" on June 14, and a kindergarten teacher in New York City |
---|
13 | 14 | | took up the cause four years later; the Betsy Ross House in |
---|
14 | 15 | | Philadelphia held Flag Day activities in 1891, and the National |

15 | 16 | | Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of |

16 | 17 | | Pennsylvania soon joined in honoring the flag on the anniversary of |

17 | 18 | | its adoption; within the decade, Chicago hosted a general public |

18 | 19 | | school observance in parks around the city for more than 300,000 |

20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, President Woodrow Wilson established Flag Day by |

26 | 27 | | 1949, President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress officially |

27 | 28 | | designating June 14 as National Flag Day; and |

28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, A powerful symbol of freedom and democracy, "Old |

29 | 30 | | Glory" inspires patriotism in the hearts of all Americans, and this |

30 | 31 | | special occasion provides an opportunity for residents of the Lone |

31 | 32 | | Star State to solemnly reflect on the rich history of our nation and |

33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Flag Day, June 14, 2015, and |

35 | 36 | | encourage all Texans to display the American flag. |
