| 6 | 7 | | of Martin Kerner of Houston, who passed away on September 30, 2014, |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Marty Kerner was born in New York City on October 9, |

| 9 | 10 | | 1947, to Alma and Paul Kerner; after moving to Texas, he attended |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Bellaire High School and went on to graduate from the University of |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Houston with a degree in political science; and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, For much of his career, Mr. Kerner served as a vice |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | president at TranspoTrade International, a freight forwarding |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | company, and his work afforded him extensive opportunities for |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | world travel; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Inspired by John F. Kennedy, Mr. Kerner devoted |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | countless hours to political activism, supporting the causes in |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | which he believed and remaining enthusiastic and involved despite |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | the challenges he faced as a progressive in a conservative majority |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | state; he was a cofounder and vice president of the Sharpstown |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Democrats Club in Houston, and in 2012, he served as a delegate to |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | the Democratic National Convention; a stalwart of his party, he is |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | fondly remembered for his sharp wit and for his acute insights into |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | political campaigns; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Kerner took great pride in Rice University and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | contributed to its athletics program through his longtime |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | membership in the Owl Club; he even persuaded his daughter, |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | Michelle, to attend Rice by taking her as a child to the school's |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | football games; in addition to being a loyal Rice fan, he was an |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | ardent baseball enthusiast; and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman was a member of Congregation |

| 32 | 33 | | Beth Yeshurun for many years and was a staunch supporter of the |

| 33 | 34 | | State of Israel; and |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, generous to his friends, and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | passionately engaged in the world around him, Marty Kerner is |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | dearly missed, and those who were blessed to share in his love and |

| 37 | 38 | | affection will forever hold him close in their hearts; now, |
