45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Family, friends, and admirers are mourning the loss
67 of Hispanic civil rights leader and decorated World War II veteran
78 Augustin Lucio Jr. of San Marcos, who died on November 13, 2014, at
89 the age of 91; and
910 WHEREAS, The son of Augustin and Maria de Jesus Lucio,
1011 Augustin Lucio Jr. grew up on a farm outside San Marcos; at the age
1112 of 18, he answered his nation's call to duty by joining the U.S.
1213 Army and was assigned to Company L, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Regiment,
1314 2nd Infantry Division; and
1415 WHEREAS, Mr. Lucio's first combat mission was the D-Day
1516 invasion of Normandy, and a day later, when his unit's platoon
1617 sergeant was wounded, he took charge of the 45-man troop and led
1718 them through a number of important engagements, including the
1819 Battle of the Bulge; honorably discharged in 1945, he was awarded
1920 the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart, as well as the
2021 French Croix de Guerre, among other medals and ribbons; and
2122 WHEREAS, Following the war, Mr. Lucio returned to San Marcos,
2223 where he and his wife, Delia, shared 69 happy years; together, they
2324 became the parents of four beloved children, Rosemary, Carol, Joe,
2425 and Robert, and later knew the joy of welcoming into their family
2526 three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and
2627 WHEREAS, Mr. Lucio enjoyed a notable career of more than
2728 three decades at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, retiring in
2829 1979 as a chief supply inspector; he contributed to the San Marcos
2930 community as a cofounder of the local chapter of the American GI
3031 Forum and as a member of VFW Post No. 3413, the Knights of Columbus,
3132 the Holy Name Society, and St. John's Catholic Church; in addition
3233 to serving on numerous national, state, and local committees, he
3334 was a member of the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School
3435 District board for 19 years and led a boycott of the district over
3536 its lack of Hispanic teachers; the San Marcos High School library is
3637 named in his honor; and
3738 WHEREAS, Augustin Lucio was a brave soldier, a caring husband
3839 and father, and a committed member of his community, and the
3940 contributions he made in each of these roles will long inspire all
4041 those who were fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Augustin Lucio Jr.
4344 and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
4445 wife, Delia; to his daughters, Rosemary and Carol; to his sons, Joe
4546 and his wife, Sheryl, and Robert and his wife, Josie; to his
4647 grandchildren, Steven and his wife, Brooke, Janellica and her
4748 husband, Paul, and Gabriel; to his great-grandchildren, Lauryn,
4849 Kaytlynn, Kayley, and Valentina; to his sister, Hermina Flores; and
4950 to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
5051 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5152 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5253 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Augustin
5354 Lucio Jr.
