5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Corsicana and throughout Navarro |

6 | 7 | | County are gathering at the State Capitol on March 10, 2015, to |

7 | 8 | | celebrate the role their region has played in the colorful story of |

8 | 9 | | Texas; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Established with the approval of the state |
---|
10 | 11 | | legislature on April 25, 1846, Navarro County was named after José |
---|
11 | 12 | | Antonio Navarro, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence; |
---|
12 | 13 | | and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In 1848, a 100-acre plot of land was donated for the |
---|
14 | 15 | | creation of a county seat, with the name, Corsicana, chosen by |
---|
15 | 16 | | Navarro to honor his father's birthplace on the isle of Corsica; the |
---|
16 | 17 | | community developed as a trading and shipping center following the |
---|
17 | 18 | | completion of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad in 1871; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, With Corsicana experiencing substantial population |
---|
19 | 20 | | growth, an effort was made to drill for groundwater beneath the |
---|
20 | 21 | | city's soil in 1894; this led to the discovery of oil, and |
---|
21 | 22 | | consequently, the first oil boom in the state of Texas, forever |
---|
22 | 23 | | changing the economy and destiny of Navarro County; more than 200 |
---|
23 | 24 | | million barrels of oil have since been pumped from the county, which |
---|
24 | 25 | | claims the longest continuous oil flow in Texas history; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Today, petroleum, diversified manufacturing, and |
---|
26 | 27 | | agriculture form the foundation of the economy; among the varied |
---|
27 | 28 | | crops grown in the region's fertile black loam are corn, cotton, |
---|
28 | 29 | | wheat, sorghum, and sunflowers, and local ranches raise beef |
---|
29 | 30 | | cattle, dairy cows, and horses; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Corsicana remains the cultural center of Navarro |
---|
31 | 32 | | County, and residents of this fine city benefit from the |
---|
32 | 33 | | outstanding and affordable educational opportunities provided by |
---|
33 | 34 | | Navarro College; the community thrives as a major distribution |
---|
34 | 35 | | point and is home to a Russell Stover candy factory and the Navarro |
---|
35 | 36 | | Pecan Company, one of the largest pecan-shelling facilities in the |
---|
36 | 37 | | world; the celebrated Collin Street Bakery is also a favorite of |
---|
37 | 38 | | visitors passing through town, and orders are received for its |
---|
38 | 39 | | delectable fruitcake from every corner of the globe; and |
---|
39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Enhancing the quality of life in the area, outlets |
---|
40 | 41 | | for recreation are found at nearby Navarro Mills Lake, Lake |
---|
41 | 42 | | Halbert, and Richland-Chambers Reservoir; in addition, the |
---|
42 | 43 | | county's fascinating history is preserved at such attractions as |
---|
43 | 44 | | the Pearce Museum, the Glenn Cumbie Museum of Aviation and Military |
---|
44 | 45 | | History, and Pioneer Village; moreover, every spring the Corsicana |
---|
45 | 46 | | Derrick Days festival celebrates the area oil and gas industry and |
---|
46 | 47 | | its economic benefits; and |
---|
47 | 48 | | WHEREAS, The resourceful citizens of Navarro County have made |
---|
48 | 49 | | many notable contributions to the cultural fabric of Texas, and |
---|
49 | 50 | | they take justifiable pride in the rich heritage and unique |
---|
50 | 51 | | amenities that make their region such a notable part of the Lone |
---|
51 | 52 | | Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
52 | 53 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
53 | 54 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 10, 2015, as Corsicana/Navarro |
---|
54 | 55 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to all those who have |
---|
55 | 56 | | come to Austin today sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and |
---|
56 | 57 | | informative visit. |
