45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Corsicana and throughout Navarro
67 County are gathering at the State Capitol on March 10, 2015, to
78 celebrate the role their region has played in the colorful story of
89 Texas; and
910 WHEREAS, Established with the approval of the state
1011 legislature on April 25, 1846, Navarro County was named after José
1112 Antonio Navarro, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence;
1213 and
1314 WHEREAS, In 1848, a 100-acre plot of land was donated for the
1415 creation of a county seat, with the name, Corsicana, chosen by
1516 Navarro to honor his father's birthplace on the isle of Corsica; the
1617 community developed as a trading and shipping center following the
1718 completion of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad in 1871; and
1819 WHEREAS, With Corsicana experiencing substantial population
1920 growth, an effort was made to drill for groundwater beneath the
2021 city's soil in 1894; this led to the discovery of oil, and
2122 consequently, the first oil boom in the state of Texas, forever
2223 changing the economy and destiny of Navarro County; more than 200
2324 million barrels of oil have since been pumped from the county, which
2425 claims the longest continuous oil flow in Texas history; and
2526 WHEREAS, Today, petroleum, diversified manufacturing, and
2627 agriculture form the foundation of the economy; among the varied
2728 crops grown in the region's fertile black loam are corn, cotton,
2829 wheat, sorghum, and sunflowers, and local ranches raise beef
2930 cattle, dairy cows, and horses; and
3031 WHEREAS, Corsicana remains the cultural center of Navarro
3132 County, and residents of this fine city benefit from the
3233 outstanding and affordable educational opportunities provided by
3334 Navarro College; the community thrives as a major distribution
3435 point and is home to a Russell Stover candy factory and the Navarro
3536 Pecan Company, one of the largest pecan-shelling facilities in the
3637 world; the celebrated Collin Street Bakery is also a favorite of
3738 visitors passing through town, and orders are received for its
3839 delectable fruitcake from every corner of the globe; and
3940 WHEREAS, Enhancing the quality of life in the area, outlets
4041 for recreation are found at nearby Navarro Mills Lake, Lake
4142 Halbert, and Richland-Chambers Reservoir; in addition, the
4243 county's fascinating history is preserved at such attractions as
4344 the Pearce Museum, the Glenn Cumbie Museum of Aviation and Military
4445 History, and Pioneer Village; moreover, every spring the Corsicana
4546 Derrick Days festival celebrates the area oil and gas industry and
4647 its economic benefits; and
4748 WHEREAS, The resourceful citizens of Navarro County have made
4849 many notable contributions to the cultural fabric of Texas, and
4950 they take justifiable pride in the rich heritage and unique
5051 amenities that make their region such a notable part of the Lone
5152 Star State; now, therefore, be it
5253 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
5354 Legislature hereby recognize March 10, 2015, as Corsicana/Navarro
5455 County Day at the State Capitol and extend to all those who have
5556 come to Austin today sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and
5657 informative visit.
