45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Students, parents, educators, and community members
67 throughout the State of Texas are celebrating National Teacher Day
78 on May 5, 2015; and
89 WHEREAS, This worthy tradition dates to the 1940s, when
910 Arkansas educator Mattye Whyte Woodridge began corresponding with
1011 political and educational leaders to suggest an official day to
1112 honor teachers across the country; her efforts attracted the
1213 attention of Eleanor Roosevelt, who in 1953 persuaded the United
1314 States Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day; the event is now
1415 observed on the Tuesday of the first full week of May; and
1516 WHEREAS, Texas public schools employ more than 300,000
1617 teachers, who play an essential role in the lives of students across
1718 the state; as role models, motivators, and mentors, teachers give
1819 students a vision of what they are capable of achieving and equip
1920 them with skills that will help them to build rewarding, productive
2021 lives; and
2122 WHEREAS, The quality education that teachers provide is vital
2223 to the future of young people and society alike, and the exceptional
2324 contributions made by all who teach are indeed deserving of an
2425 expression of appreciation from the residents of the Lone Star
2526 State; now, therefore, be it
2627 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
2728 Legislature hereby recognize May 5, 2015, as National Teacher Day
2829 in Texas and extend to teachers throughout the state sincere best
2930 wishes for success in their important work.
