6 | 7 | | throughout the State of Texas are celebrating National Teacher Day |

7 | 8 | | on May 3, 2016; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, This worthy tradition dates to the 1940s, when |
---|
9 | 10 | | Arkansas educator Mattye Whyte Woodridge began corresponding with |
---|
10 | 11 | | political and educational leaders to suggest an official day to |
---|
11 | 12 | | honor teachers across the country; her efforts attracted the |
---|
12 | 13 | | attention of Eleanor Roosevelt, who in 1953 persuaded the United |
---|
13 | 14 | | States Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day; the event is now |
---|
14 | 15 | | observed on the Tuesday of the first full week of May; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Texas public schools employ more than 300,000 |
---|
16 | 17 | | teachers, who play an essential role in the lives of students across |
---|
17 | 18 | | the state; as role models, motivators, and mentors, teachers give |
---|
18 | 19 | | students a vision of what they are capable of achieving and equip |
---|
19 | 20 | | them with skills that will help them to build rewarding, productive |
---|
20 | 21 | | lives; and |

21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The quality education that teachers provide is vital |

22 | 23 | | to the future of young people and society alike, and the exceptional |

23 | 24 | | contributions made by all who teach are indeed deserving of an |

24 | 25 | | expression of appreciation from the residents of the Lone Star |

25 | 26 | | State; now, therefore, be it |

26 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

27 | 28 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 3, 2016, as National Teacher Day |

28 | 29 | | in Texas and extend to teachers throughout the state sincere best |
