| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas, one |

| 6 | 7 | | of the nation's oldest law enforcement organizations, are gathering |

| 7 | 8 | | in Austin on February 18, 2015, to participate in Sheriffs' |

| 8 | 9 | | Association of Texas Day at the Capitol; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Constitution created the office of sheriff |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | in each county of the state; legislation requires that a sheriff |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | conserve peace and enforce the criminal laws of the state; |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | moreover, the sheriff is responsible for the county jail, bail |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | bonds, civil process, and the security of the courts, and in some |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | smaller counties, the sheriff may also act as the tax collector; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The first meeting of the Sheriffs' Association of |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Texas took place on August 14, 1874; association members adopted |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | their preamble calling for sheriffs to assist one another in the |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | execution of laws, in the discharge of their duties against |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | criminals, and in the protection of the citizens in their |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | respective counties and throughout the state; the group has |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | continued to follow the dictates of this mission to this day; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The office of sheriff is one of the oldest forms of |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | law enforcement; sheriffs in our state's 254 counties are elected |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | to four-year terms, and each sheriff is a member of the Sheriffs' |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Association of Texas; in addition, more than 2,500 individuals are |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | active members of the group, and over 50,000 individuals are |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | associate members; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The men and women of the Sheriffs' Association of |

| 29 | 30 | | Texas are helping to make the Lone Star State an even safer place, |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | and their work benefits countless people each day; now, therefore, |

| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 18, 2015, as Sheriffs' |
