| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Santos Lujan Jr. has made invaluable contributions |

| 6 | 7 | | to the field of education during his years as a teacher and |

| 7 | 8 | | administrator; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Lujan earned his diploma in 1967 from Big Spring |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | High School, where he was a saxophonist in the Steer Band, and he |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | went on to graduate with bachelor's and master's degrees in music |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | education from West Texas State University; and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In 1972, Mr. Lujan began his career as an assistant |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | band director at Big Lake High School, and he soon advanced to head |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | director; he was named director of bands for Raymondville ISD in |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | 1977, and over the course of his 15-year tenure in that position, he |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | was instrumental in the dramatic expansion of the program and in the |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | notable success of the Bearkat Band, which consistently earned |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | first division ratings at University Interscholastic League |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | concert and sight-reading contests as well as festival competitions |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | across the state; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Lujan was promoted to assistant superintendent |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | for business and operations in 1993, and four years later, he was |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | named superintendent of Raymondville ISD; he also served as |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | superintendent of the Kermit and Culberson County-Allamoore school |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | districts and as principal of Presidio High School; and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. Lujan has received |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | well-deserved recognition for his achievements; he was selected for |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | the Region 18 Superintendent of the Year Award and was a finalist |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | for Texas Superintendent of the Year, and he was also inducted into |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | the Rio Grande Valley Band Director Hall of Fame in 2013; and |

| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Lujan is blessed with |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | the love and support of his wife, Mary Lou Lujan, and he takes great |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | pride in his two children, Santos and Adrianna, and two |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | granddaughters, Amorie and AnnaLee; and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has devoted his professional |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | life to public education, and he has made a positive difference in |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | the lives of countless individuals; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby commend Santos Lujan Jr. for his career in |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | education and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, |
