| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Canales is being honored with a Y Women in |

| 6 | 7 | | Careers Award by the YWCA in Corpus Christi on March 5, 2015; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Corpus Christi YWCA has been recognizing |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | accomplished women in the community through this awards program for |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | the past 35 years; those chosen for the distinction have all |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | achieved a notable degree of success in their respective fields, |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | and as women who demonstrate integrity, a ready willingness to take |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | on new challenges, and a commitment to excellence, they serve as |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | outstanding role models for young girls, whose empowerment is a |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | crucial part of the YWCA mission; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Canales, creator and president of the Ready |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | or Not Foundation, is a fitting recipient of this prestigious |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | accolade; when her daughter, Jackie, was diagnosed with a brain |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | tumor in 2006, Ms. Canales was inspired to start the foundation, |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | which has so far raised $2.5 million for pediatric brain cancer |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | research; her daughter is currently in remission, and Ms. Canales |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | hopes that the foundation will serve as a source of inspiration and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | optimism for other families; and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, In addition to her work with the Ready or Not |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Foundation, Ms. Canales is a practicing attorney and a petroleum |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | engineer; presently she serves as a commissioner with the Port of |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Corpus Christi, where she is a member of the audit, security, and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | asset management committees; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Through the skill and determination she brings to |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | all her efforts, Barbara Canales has earned the esteem of her peers |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | and made contributions to her community that will resonate far into |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | the future; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Barbara Canales on receiving a 2015 |

| 34 | 35 | | Y Women in Careers Award from the YWCA of Corpus Christi and extend |
